drittes Epeisodion: 1. Danaos, welcher bisher auf dem Götteraltare stand und nach der Meerseite spähte (721), kündigt das Nahen der Ägyptischen Flotte an und gibt seine Absicht kund Hilfe zu holen. 2. In dem Kommos 742-769 drücken die Danaiden dem Vater ihre Angst aus, während dieser sie zu beruhigen sucht. 3. Danaos bleibt bei seinem Ent- schlusse in der Hoffnung vor dem Ausschiffen der ägyptischen Mann- schaft mit Hilfe zurückzukommen. (Der Dichter braucht eben den Schauspieler, welcher den Danaos gegeben hat, für den Herold der Ägyptiaden.)

Mit wunderbarer Lebhaftig- keit wird das Schiff personifiziert: Das Vorderteil blickt immer vor- wärts mit den Augen auf seinen Weg und vernimmt des lenkenden Steuerruders uns nicht willkommene Sprache, obwohl dieses am Ende des Schiffes ist, leider nur allzu gut" ( γλῶσσαν οὐ φίλην für τῶς ἂν οὐ φίλη Briggs). An angemalte Augen (Eustath. zu Il. 14, 717 πτυχή ἐστιν ὅπου οἵ τε ὀφθαλμοὶ ζωγραφοῦνται καὶ τὸ τῆς νεὼς ὄνομα ἐπιγράφεται) ist hier nicht zu denken. · ὑστάτου νεώς wie πυμάτη ἀσπίδος Hom. Z 118. Auch Ag. 1629, Eur. El. 1014 verlängert γλῶσσα die vorhergehende Silbe nicht. Ebenso findet sich vor B2, besonders vor βλαστάνω βλάστη), seltener sonst ( βύβλου 769, ἀμφίβληστρα Eur. Fragm. 697) eine kurze Thesis.
