For verily the limit of abundant health is insa- tiable 1 . For calamity presses upon it a close-adjoining neighbour, and a man's destiny * * * holding on in a straightforward course, is apt to dash upon an unseen reef. And if timidity, fling away a part, with a well-measured cast of the sling, in defence of its wealth in possession, the entire fabric sinks not, teeming too full of woe, nor does it make the bark to founder. Often, in sooth, an ample boon from Jove, and from the yearly furrows, quells the pangs of famine.

Non v'è di salute soverchia

un termine fisso: s'appoggia
il morbo vicino a sue mura;
e frangesi a scoglio invisibile
sovente la sorte che prospera
moveva per rotta sicura.
1175
Ma se sa, con destra frombola,
una parte del suo bene
il timor gittare in mare,
non affonda tutto il carico,
sotto il peso delle pene,
1180
né tra i flutti il legno spare.
E spesso dal cielo una pioggia
dirotta, lo sterile male
distrugge nell' annua novale.

Too far, too far our mortal spirits strive,
Grasping at utter weal, unsatisfied—
1155
Till the fell curse, that dwelleth hard beside,
Thrust down the sundering wall. Too fair they blow,
The gales that waft our bark on Fortune's tide!
Swiftly we sail, the sooner all to drive
Upon the hidden rock, the reef of woe.
1160
Then if the hand of caution warily
Sling forth into the sea
Part of the freight, lest all should sink below,
From the deep death it saves the bark: even so,
Doom-laden though it be, once more may rise
1165
His household, who is timely wise.
How oft the famine-stricken field
Is saved by God's large gift, the new year's yield!

Traun, der Gesundheit vollblühende Kraft zerstört
Unersättlich sich selbst; denn die Krankheit wohnt
Ihr allzeit lauernd zur Seite.
Segelnd im Glücke, zerschellt

Menschengeschick an verborgner Klippe.

Plut. 39, vgl. Wieseler Zeitschr. f. d. Altertumsw. 1848 S. 108 f.).
