Herald

I forbid you to act thus in violation of the city.

Antigone

I forbid you to make useless proclamations to me.

Herald

And yet a citizenry that has escaped evil can be harsh.
1050

Antigone

Let it be harsh! This man will not be unburied.

Herald

What! Will you honor with burial a man whom the city detests?

Antigone

For a long time now the gods have ceased to hold him in honor.

Herald

No, he was honored until he put this land in jeopardy.

Antigone

He suffered evil and gave evil in return.
1055

Herald

But this act was against all the citizens, not only one man.

Antigone

Discord is the last of the gods to close an argument. I will bury him. Put an end to your big talk.

Herald

Well then, follow your own rash plan, but I forbid it. Exit.

Chorus

Ah, misery!

O Erinyes, far-famed destroyers of families, goddesses of death who have thus laid ruin to the family of Oedipus, digging it up from the roots! What will happen to me? What should I do? What plan shall I devise? How can I have the heart neither to weep for you
1060

nor escort you to your tomb? But I am afraid and turn away in terror of the citizens. You, at least, Eteocles, will have many mourners, while he, wretched man, departs without lamentation
1065

and has a dirge sung only by one sister. Now who could comply with that?
1070

First Half-Chorus

Let the city take action or not take action against those who lament for Polynices. We, at all events, will go and

bury him with her, following the funeral procession. For this grief is shared by all our race, and the city approves as just different things at different times.
1075

Second Half-Chorus

We will go with this other corpse, as the city and justice, too, approves.

For after the blessed gods and powerful Zeus, he it was who saved the city of the Cadmeans from being capsized and flooded by a wave of foreign men—he beyond all others. Exeunt omnes.

The Seven against Thebes. (OCR draft) Experimental (The Seven against Thebes.. Theodore Alois Buckley, 1849.) — 1048 focus

Not so, at least before he put this realm in jeopardy.

Antigone

Having suffered injuriously he repaid with injury.

Herald

Aye, but this deed of his fell on all instead of one.

Antigone

Contention is the last of the gods to finish a dispute,

and I will bury him; make no more words.

Herald

Well, take thine own way—yet I forbid thee.

Exit Herald.

Chorus

Alas! alas! O ye fatal Furies, proudly triumphant, and destructive to this race, ye that have ruined the family of Œdipus from its root. What will become of me? What shall I do? What can I devise? How shall I have the heart neither to bewail thee nor to escort thee to the tomb? But I dread and shrink from the terror of the citizens. Thou, at all events, shalt in sooth have many mourners; but he, wretched one, departs unsigned for, having the solitary-wailing dirge of his sister. Who will agree to this?

Semi-Chorus

Let the state do or not do aught to those who bewail Polynices. We, on this side will go and join to escort his funeral procession; for both this sorrow is common to the race, and the state at different times sanctions different maxims of justice.

Semi-Chorus

But we will go with this corpse, as both the city and justice join to sanction. For next to the Immortals and the might of Jove, this man prevented the city of the Cadmaeans from being destroyed, and thoroughly overwhelmed by the surge of foreign enemies.

LES SEPT CONTRE THÈBES (OCR draft) Experimental (LES SEPT CONTRE THÈBES. Paul Mazon, 1920-1925.) — 1048 focus

A quoi me résoudre ?

NOTES. THE SEVEN AGAINST THEBES.

286. The abrupt

? cannot be right. I make no doubt that the poet's syntax was continuous; whether

, or,

, as in Soph. Antig., or again,

, the roof.

338.

, should be responded to by

. First, I make little doubt that

should be

(approaches) which answers all the conditions of the case. Next, the Cretic

convicts the Molossus

as false.

is wrong both in metre and in sense.

must be the net-rope, by which victors swept the streets and squares, and caught runaways. It seems to be alluded to in Iliad, v. 487, where it has the epithet

, which in the tragic poets may be

, or here, perhaps,

356—364. In 356—3G4 Hermann has rightly discerned, that the

does not mean death, but violation of the person; that

means apprehension, fear, and that

has been inserted by some one who did not understand the word

aright. For

Hermann has

: but it seems to me that we rather need (writing

, " any random man," for

)— Here

must agree with

—rather harsh; and

expresses, that this is a new misery superadded— an after-clap. I have changed the singulars,

, into plurals.

781.

is clearly absurd,

a highly probable correction.

782. It is incredible that the poet should have written

, as in the old text; and to alter

into

makes a very weak tautology. I feel some conviction that the poet wrote

, fierce nurses, which he then expounds to be the

826. I think the true text must be— in fact,

καὶ

demands

preceding.

998.

is interpreted of Jocasta; but could a pious daughter abruptly call her mother a pest? To me it seems that the death of the two brethren was a woe sleeping in the grave by the side of the father.

1041.

is obviously corrupt. I suggest.—

. “ Hitherto his fortunes have not been dishonoured by the gods." The reply is: “No; not before he attacked this country"—which quite agrees.

But yet, with fear I shrink and thrill,

Presageful of the city's will!

Thou, O Eteocles, shalt have

Full rites, and mourners at thy grave,

But he, thy brother slain, shall he,

With none to weep or cry Alas,

To unbefriended burial pass?

Only one sister o'er his bier,

To raise the cry and pour the tear—

Who can obey such stern decree?

Semi-Chorus

Let those who hold our city's sway

Wreak, or forbear to wreak, their will

On those who cry, Ah, well-a-day!

Lamenting Polynices still!

We will go forth and, side by side

With her, due burial will provide!
1115

Royal he was; to him be paid

Our grief, wherever he be laid!

The crowd may sway, and change, and still

Take its caprice for Justice' will!

But we this dead Eteocles,
1120

As Justice wills and Right decrees,

Will bear unto his grave!

For—under those enthroned on high

And Zeus' eternal royalty—

He unto us salvation gave!

A wild assault of outland folk,

A savage, alien wave!

Die Krasis von μὴ ἀ- ( μανατραπῆναι wie μάλλα) findet sich öfters bei Äschylos (Prom. 678, Cho. 917, Eum. 85, 86, 694, 752, Hik. 215), einigemal bei Sophokles (El. 1169, O. Aber và µá- λιστα schleppt nach, weshalb L. Dindorf die Symmetrie der beiden Halbchorpartien dadurch herstellt, daß er κύματι φωτῶν κατακλυσθῆν zum abschließenden Parömiakos macht. Herald I forbid you to act thus in violation of the city.

Antigone I forbid you to make useless proclamations to me.

Herald And yet a citizenry that has escaped evil can be harsh. 1050

Antigone Let it be harsh! This man will not be unburied.

Herald What! Will you honor with burial a man whom the city detests?

Antigone For a long time now the gods have ceased to hold him in honor.

Herald No, he was honored until he put this land in jeopardy.

Antigone He suffered evil and gave evil in return. 1055

Herald But this act was against all the citizens, not only one man.

Antigone Discord is the last of the gods to close an argument. I will bury him. Put an end to your big talk.

Herald Well then, follow your own rash plan, but I forbid it. Exit.

First Half-Chorus Let the city take action or not take action against those who lament for Polynices. We, at all events, will go and bury him with her, following the funeral procession. For this grief is shared by all our race, and the city approves as just different things at different times. 1075

Second Half-Chorus We will go with this other corpse, as the city and justice, too, approves. For after the blessed gods and powerful Zeus, he it was who saved the city of the Cadmeans from being capsized and flooded by a wave of foreign men—he beyond all others. Exeunt omnes. 1080
