I shrink in awe from looking on thee, and I shrink in awe from speaking in thy presence, by reason of my ancient reverence for thee.
But since persuaded by thy groanings I have come from below, in no wise utter a tedious tale, but concisely tell me, and complete the whole, laying aside thine awe for me.
I dread 1 to comply, and I dread to speak in thy presence, telling things hateful to tell to friends.
But since the ancient dread of thy spirit is an obstacle to thee, do thou, aged partner of my bed, high-born dame, cease from these wailings and groans of thine, and give me a clear account. Human calamities will befal mankind. For many ills arise to mortals by sea, and many by land, if their more lengthened life be far protracted.
In what way? came there any blast of pestilence, or a rebellion on the city?

My wonted awe u o'ercomes me; in thy preſence
I dare not raiſe my eyes, I dare not ſpeak.
Since from the realms below, by thy ſad ſtrains
Adjur'd, I come, ſpeak, let thy words be brief,
840
Say whence thy grief, tell me unaw'd by fear.
I dread to forge a flatt'ring tale, I dread
To grieve thee with an harſh offenſive truth.
Since fear hath chain'd his tongue, high-honour'd
dame,

Once my imperial confort, check thy tears,
Thy griefs; and ſpeak diſtinctly.

Questi mali
Come? Fu flagel di peste? Fu di popolo sommossa?

With awe on thee I gaze,
And, standing face to face,
I tremble as I did in olden days!
710
Nay, but as I rose to earth again, obedient to your call,
Prithee, tarry not in parley! be one word enough for all—
Speak and gaze on me unshrinking, neither let my face appal!
I tremble to reveal,
Yet tremble to conceal
715
Things hard for friends to feel!
Nay, but if the old-time terror on your spirit keeps its hold,
Speak thou, O royal lady who didst couch with me of old!
Stay thy weeping and lamenting and to me reveal the truth—
Speak! for man is born to sorrow; yea, the proverb sayeth sooth!
720
'Tis the doom of mortal beings, if they live to see old age,
To suffer bale, by land and sea, through war and tempest's rage.
Speak—by what chance? did man rebel, or pestilence descend?

Mich erfüllt Scheu vor dem Anblick,
Mich erfüllt Scheu, und in Ehrfurcht
Vor dem alten Gebieter verstumm' ich.
670
Ohne Scheu vor meinem Antlik, Alles, was dein Herz beschwert.
Mir verbeut Furcht den Gehorsam,
Mir verbeut Furcht, dir in's Antliß
675
Rede mir! Leicht überfällt wohl menschlich Leid die Sterblichen;
680
