And then I refuse not to become the prey of dogs, and the food of the birds of the country: for death is free from mournful ills: let fate approach, having seized me before the nuptial bed. What remedy for myself delivering me from the marriage can I yet find 5
Pour forth a voice to the heavens, supplicating strains to the gods, and such as will bring about good fortune to me, being the means of deliverance for me 6 . Father; do not love violence, seeing with just eyes and respect your suppliants, O earth-ruling, all-powerful Jove.
For the male offspring of Ægyptus intolerable in insolence pursuing me with speed, seek with foul abuse to seize me a fugitive by force. But the beam of your balance is over all: and what without you is perfected to mortals?

tout-puissant, seigneur d'Argos.

Throw me, e'er that deteſted day,
To prowling dogs and rav'nous birds a prey.
No form of death affrights me now:
890
O thou, aſſign'd the wretches' friend,
To bid his miſeries end,
And in oblivion's balm to ſteep his woe;
Come, gentle death, e'er that ſad hour
Which drags me to the nuptial bed;
895
And let me find in thy ſoft pow'r
A refuge from the force I dread;
O ſpread thy ſable cloud,
And in its unpierc'd gloom our forrows ſhroud!
Higher let your voices riſe,
900
And ſwell the choral deſcant to the ſkies,
Notes of ſuch a lofty vein,
That Gods may liſten to the ſolemn ſtrain !
Eternal Sire, from Heav'n's high throne,
If thy indignant eyeballs glow
905
With vengeance at foul deeds below,
Look down, thou Sovereign of the World, look down:
Ægyptus' ſons, a ruffian race,
Our flying footſteps chace;
And on our trembling, weeping band
910
Advance to lay their vengeful hand:
Extend thy golden ſcales,
For without thee what mortal worth avails?
By land, by ſea,
They ſeek their prey;

Yea, a prey to the dogs and the birds of the mount will I give me to be,—
860
From wailing and curse and pollution it is death, only death, sets me free:
Let death come upon me before to the ravisher's bed I am thrust;
What champion, what saviour but death can I find, or what refuge from lust?
I will utter my shriek of entreaty, a prayer that shrills up to the sky,
That calleth the gods to compassion, a tuneful, a pitiful cry,
865
That is loud to invoke the releaser. O father, look down on the fight;
Look down in thy wrath on the wronger, with eyes that are eager for right.
Zeus, thou that art lord of the world, whose kingdom is strong over all,
Have mercy on us! At thine altar for refuge and safety we call.
For the race of Aegyptus is fierce, with greed and with malice afire;
870
They cry as the questing hounds, they sweep with the speed of desire.
But thine is the balance of fate, thou rulest the wavering scale,
And without thee no mortal emprise shall have strength to achieve or prevail.

All das jammerschwere Leid.

Komme denn sein Tag, bevor
Mich das Brautgemach empfängt!
Was vermag mich sonst zu retten,
Was zu lösen diese Bande?
- Dritte Strophe.
Um Hülfe jamm're himmelan,
770
Den Göttern flehe mein Gesang,
Der diese Leiden ende, der
Mich löse! Vater, sieh den Kampf!
Dein gerechtes Auge lieb' es nicht,
Freche Gewalt zu schau'n!
775
Deinen Schüzlingen hilf, o Zeus,
Weltlenkender Gott der Allmacht!
Dritte Gegenstrophe.
Denn sieh, Aegyptos' Söhne, frech,
Mit unerträglich wildem Trok
In hastigem Laufe stürmen sie
780
Der Flüchtigen nach; mit wildem Ruf
Trachten sie gewaltsam mich zu fah'n.
Dein ist die Wage, du
Wäge! Schaffst du nicht das Gedeih'n,
Was könnte der Mensch vollenden?
785
