Danaos, welcher bisher auf dem Götteraltare stand und nach der Meerseite spähte (721), kündigt das Nahen der Ägyptischen Flotte an und gibt seine Absicht kund Hilfe zu holen. 2. In dem Kommos 742-769 drücken die Danaiden dem Vater ihre Angst aus, während dieser sie zu beruhigen sucht. 3. Danaos bleibt bei seinem Ent- schlusse in der Hoffnung vor dem Ausschiffen der ägyptischen Mann- schaft mit Hilfe zurückzukommen. (Der Dichter braucht eben den Schauspieler, welcher den Danaos gegeben hat, für den Herold der Ägyptiaden.)

Kommos. Jede Strophe und Antistrophe beginnt mit zwei Trimetern, welche, wie es scheint, der κορυφαῖος vorträgt, während die melische Partie der Chor singt. Jeder Strophe und Antistrophe folgen zwei Trimeter des Danaos.

ὡς kausal. ὠκύπτεροι steht wie ταχείαι statt eines Ad- verbiums und wird durch μήκος χρόνου οὐδὲν ἐν μέσῳ erläutert (keine Weile ist zwischen jetzt und ihrer Ankunft). — Für ἥξουσι, wie der Sinn verlangt, hat die Hand- schrift ήκουσιν. Dieser Fehler findet sich sehr häufig in den Hand- schriften. Auch Fragm. 6, 4 ist ἥκουσ für ἥξουσ' überliefert; ἥκουσι würde für die Erklärung des Schol. von ἐν μέσῳ: τῆς ἡμῶν φυγῆς καὶ τῆς τούτων παρουσίας (sie sind uns rasch nachgekommen) passen; aber die Furcht der Da- naiden kann sich nur auf das bald zu erwartende Erscheinen der Vet- tern beziehen. Dem entspricht die Beruhigung 772. - Ζη ὠκύπτεροι vgl. λινόπτερα . . ναυτίλων ὀχήματα Prom. 484, zu ἐν μέσῳ Eur. Hera- klid. 171 κακῶς γὰρ Αργείοισιν οἶδ᾽ ώπλισμένοι μάχοιντ᾽ ἂν ἡβήσαντες χούν μέσῳ πολὺς χρόνος, Phoen. 588 ἀνήλωται χρόνος οὖν μέσῳ μάτην, Verg. Aen. IX 395 nec longum in medio tempus.
