Ἡ δε, κατα τα ὑποκριτικα

: meaning the
σχηματα λεξεως
mentioned just before, cap. xix. with which these modes plainly coincide; for the
πτώσεις ῥηματων
here mentioned are no other than the
Ἐγκλισεις
, modes, or moods, of the Grammarians. — [See Hermes, I. 8, p. 144 , and particularly the notes there.]
Και κατα ποιας ἐγκλισεις, ὡς δη τινες ΠΤΩΣΕΙΣ ΡΗΜΑΤΙΚΑΣ καλεσι.
Dion. Hal. de Struct. &c. Sect. 6. — But he speaks of the term as applied only to the modes; for the tenses,

πτῶσις - εἴδη ἐστίν: πτῶσιν (casum) Graeci tam nominum quam verborum terminationum affectiones appellant. vid. Aristotel. de Interpr. c. 2 et 3. Latini quoque varias verborum positiones casuum nomine interdum denotaverunt. statim in illis ἡ μὲν τὸ κατὰ τὸ τούτου alterum τὸ accepi a Robortello sustentandae structurae plane necessarium. 1) Ego non is sum qui illam nominis ἄρθρον explicandi rationem veram esse contendam, immo ἄρθρον passivo intellectu dictum existimo.
