Commentary

Commentary on Aeschylus: Eumenides (Aeschylus. Eumenides. Sidgwick, Arthur, editor. Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1887.)

845. ἀπό is separated from the verb aἴρw and draws near to the substantive, as in Epic: one of the forms of the so-called Tmesis. In prose it would be ἀπῆραν. The verb simply means carry off, take away.

848. συμφέρω , here used in the rather unusual sense of endure, not resent: the English idiom (which in meaning exactly suits this place), I will bear with thy wrath, is only superficially similar. Somewhat like this use is πάντα συμφέρουσ᾽ Ἰάσονι Eur. Med. 13, συμφέρειν τοῖς κρείσσοσι (‘comply') Soph. El. 1465, οὐδέποτ᾽ εὐφραν- θήσεται ἀνὴρ ἐὰν μὴ τῇ γυναικὶ συμφέρῃ ( agree) Ar. Lys. 166: the metaphor being [Verrall, Eur. Med. 1. c.] probably of a yoke-fellow pulling with, and not against, one.

851. ἐλθοῦσαι ., conditional, if you go.'

mvp-sidgwick-399-1-1 I take Wieseler's excellent emendation καὶ τῷ μὲν εἶ συ, i. e. and by that (old age) you are far wiser, age and wisdom being naturally united. So the Scholiast explains the line διὰ τὸν χρόνον, i. e. wiser by lapse of time.

ἐλθοῦσαι ., conditional, if you go.'
