I willingly do these things for these my citizens, having settled in this place these mighty deities, and hard to be appeased: for they have obtained by lot to administer all things regarding men. But he who has not found them gentle, knows not whence come the ills of life: for the sins of his forefathers lead him away to these, and silent destruction with hostile wrath lays him low even while talking big.

Wohl gesorgt hab' ich für meine Bürger,

Behold, with gracious heart well pleased
I for my citizens do grant
Fulfilment of this covenant:
And here, their wrath at length appeased,
These mighty deities shall stay.
1065
For theirs it is by right to sway
The lot that rules our mortal day,
And he who hath not inly felt
Their stern decree, ere long on him,
Not knowing why and whence, the grim
1070
Life-crushing blow is dealt.
The father's sin upon the child
Descends, and sin is silent death,
And leads him on the downward path,
By stealth beguiled,
1075
Unto the Furies: though his state
On earth were high, and loud his boast,
Victim of silent ire and hate
He dwells among the Lost.

Commentary on Aeschylus: Eumenides (Aeschylus. Eumenides. Sidgwick, Arthur, editor. Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1887.)

838. παλαιόφρονα , of ancient wisdom, Aeschylean compound, applied Suppl. 593 to Zeus. κατά τε γᾶς is the best emendation. The indignity which the Furies complain of is being banished to this κευθμών, to dwell beneath the earth.

841. δâ . is Doric form of γῆ. So Ag. 1072 ὀτοτοῖ πόποι δᾶ.

Commentary (Arthur Sidgwick, 1887) (OCR draft) (Arthur Sidgwick's commentary on the Eumenides, aligned to the canonical Greek text.) focus

παλαιόφρονα , of ancient wisdom, Aeschylean compound, applied Suppl. 593 to Zeus. κατά τε γᾶς is the best emendation. The indignity which the Furies complain of is being banished to this κευθμών, to dwell beneath the earth.

mvp-sidgwick-394-1-1 In the MSS. φεῦ comes before μύσος, which breaks the dochmiac foot and is impossible, though the Scholiast seems to have read it there.

mvp-sidgwick-394-2-1 It does not much matter whether we put it before the line, or after, or suppress it. I follow Weil in reading it before.

δâ . is Doric form of γῆ. So Ag. 1072

ὀτοτοῖ πόποι δᾶ.

mvp-sidgwick-396-1-1 I adopt (with Franz, Lin. P. Weil, Weck.) L. Dindorf's brilliant conjecture τιμᾶν δαναιᾶν, ancient honours, for the meaningless δαμαίων of MSS. The gods unconquerable wiles have reft me from my ancient honours as of no account.'

ἀπό is separated from the verb αἴρω and draws near to the substantive, as in Epic: one of the forms of the so-called Tmesis. In prose it would be ἀπῆραν. The verb simply means carry off, take away.
