Commentary

Commentary on Aeschylus: Eumenides (Aeschylus. Eumenides. Sidgwick, Arthur, editor. Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1887.)

855. δόμοις Ερεχθέως , the Erechtheum or great temple of Erechtheus (famous mythical hero-king of Athens), stood on the Akropolis.

857. ὅσων , ‘such honour as.' Pauw's and Paley's emendation of ὅσην MSS., a reading which will not construe, and is due probably to an attempt to alter the awkward collocation of genitives. The gen. ὅσων is attracted to the case governed by τεύξει. 1. 86ο. ἀοίνοις ἐμμανεῖς θυμώμασιν, ‘raging with fury not of wine,' but implanted by the Eumenides. This highly Aeschylean phrase does not agree with νέων, as in sense it should but with characteristic boldness is transferred to θηγάνας αἱματηράς, 'the whetstones of bloodshed,' as he calls the frenzy of the Furies, by another bold and imaginative figure. ἀοίνοις is specially appropriate to the Furies, as they were goddesses who tasted no wine, 1. 107.
