May Maia's most propitious 6 son also, willing him an auspicious issue, rightfully take up the cause. Many other mysterious things too will he develope if he be willing ; and uttering obscure language, both by night he brings dark- ness before the eyes, and in the daytime he is nought clearer.

Thou, son of Maia, come, and with thee lead
Succeſs, that crowns the daring deed:
915
To form the close and dark design,
Whether th' ambiguous tale thou lov'ſt to weave,
And throw around the veil of night;
Or bid'st e'en truth itself deceive,
Diſplay'd in all the dazzling blaze of light;
920
The pow'rs of seeresy are thine.
Then ſhall this penſive female train
Theſe rich oblations pay no more;
No more the melancholy strain,
Tuned to the voice of anguiſh, pour,
925
Raptur'd their triumph ſhall I ſee,
My friends from ruffian danger free.

Il figliuolo anch'ei di Maia
giunger deve al mio soccorso:
ei, se vuol, su l'altrui corso
sa spirar prospero vento.
Spesso ei svela eventi incogniti;

poi, col suon d'oscuro accento,
stende, pur se il sole brilla,
buio e notte a la pupilla,
E tu da la gran fauce
de l'eccelsa caverna

vaticinante, accordami
che ancor prospera io scerna
la casa del mio duce,
e lui stesso, dal buio
ch'or lo fascia, con liberi

And Hermes, Maia's child, lend hand to save,
Willing the right, and guide
Our state with Fortune's breeze adown the favouring tide.
Whate'er in darkness hidden lies,
He utters at his will;
910
He at his will throws darkness on our eyes,
By night and eke by day inscrutable.
Then, then shall wealth atone
The ills that here were done.

Helfe mit allgerecht Maja's Sohn!
Mög' er ihm, verderbenschwer,
Frischen Hauch zur That verleih'n!
Du erhellst die Nacht,

810
Hüllst du das Aug' in Nacht und Finsterniß;

Deinde αυδάν, vera scriptura, super vitiosum utav adscripta erat, et propterea alieno loco inserta est. Accesserunt alii errores.
