And I learn their return from my eyes, being myself my own witness. And yet, notwithstanding this, my soul within me, self-taught, is chanting the lament of an Erinnys unaccompanied by the lyre, in nought possessing the dear confidence of hope. And my bosom tells no idle tale, my heart being whirled in eddies by just thoughts that have fulfilment. But I pray that those, beyond my hope, may turn out to be false, so as to come to no fulfilment.

See them return’d to Greece again:

Yet, while the ſullen lyre in ſilence lies,
Erinnys wakes the mournful ſtrain :

And now mine eyes and not another's see
Their safe return.
Yet none the less in me
The inner spirit sings a boding song,
Self-prompted, sings the Furies' strain—
1145
And seeks, and seeks in vain,
To hope and to be strong!
Ah! to some end of Fate, unseen, unguessed,
Are these wild throbbings of my heart and breast—
Yea, of some doom they tell—
1150
Each pulse, a knell.
Lief, lief I were, that all
To unfulfilment's hidden realm might fall.

Hell mit Augen sah ich nun,
945
950
Und nicht graut mir umsonst hier:
Von Furcht der nahenden
Vollendung wild umhergewirbelt pocht das Herz.
Mög' es anders, o Götter, als
Wir's geahnt, als eitle Lüge
955
All' in eitles Nichts vergeh'n!
Bweite Strophe.
