Agamemnon

1. Ce que craint Agamemnon, ce n'est pas le remords ou la honte qu'éveillerait en lui la voix d'Iphigénie ; c'est un danger plus grave, celui d'une imprécation lancée par la victime sur son meurtrier. Une fois lâchée, la formule imprécatoire agit d'elle-même, elle « marche à son but sans défaillance » (Sept, 840) ; il n'est au pouvoir de personne de l'arrêter ; celui même qui l'a lancée ne saurait la rappeler. Il n'existe donc qu'un moyen de s'en garantir : clore de force les lèvres qui pourraient la prononcer. L'allure haletante de la phrase, qui, contrairement à l'usage, est reprise et prolongée au delà de la strophe, traduit l'angoisse, l'impatience brutale du Roi.
2. La victime a été portée à l'autel « couverte de ses voiles ». Maintenant, pour la frapper, on a fait tomber sa robe : c'est le signal du sacrifice, et les Grecs voient soudain ses yeux, qui implorent la pitié, et sa bouche, impuissante à parler.

Parodos, bestehend (wie die Parodos der Perser und der Hiketides) aus drei Teilen, dem Recitativ des Chorführers in Anapästen 40-103, dem Gesang des Chorführers mit ἐπιφθέγματα (124) des Gesamtchores 104-169, dem Chorgesang 170-269. Der erste Teil beginnt mit der Schuld und Sühne der Trojaner, legt die äufseren Verhältnisse dar und giebt mit dem Verlangen zu erfahren, was die überall auf den Altären der Stadt angezündeten Opferfeuer zu bedeuten haben (83-87) die Motivierung für das Auftreten des Chors. Der zweite Teil berichtet eine Weissagung des Kalchas, welche ängstliche Besorgnis in betreff des Heerführers weckt. Der dritte begründet diese Besorgnis mit sittlichen Grundsätzen und erklärt das Leiden, das den siegreichen Agamemnon erwartet, als Sühne für eine Schuld, für die unerhörte Opferung der eigenen Tochter.
