Come, O king! sacker of Troy, offspring of Atreus, how shall I greet thee, how shall I do thee reverence, so as neither to overstep nor to fall short of the due meed of affection? 3 Many among mortals prefer the semblance of good while they transgress justice. And to sigh over him that is in adversity every one is ready, but the gnawing of sorrow reaches not to their heart. And with a like appearance they unite in the joy of others, forcing their unsmiling countenances. But whoever well knows his flock 4 , it is not possible that the eyes of a man who seems from kindly feeling to fawn in watery friendliness should escape him. Thou too, at that time when fitting forth the armament in Helen's cause, (for I will not conceal it from thee.) wast [to my eyes] pourtrayed most gracelessly, and as ill guiding the helm of thy thoughts in forcing on men doomed to die a constrained valour. But now to us who have ended, (their toils) the labour seems to have been in good will, (as we confess) not from light impulse, nor without friendly disposition 5 . And in time, after thorough inquiry, thou wilt know both him of the citizens that hath justly, and him that hath unduly administered the affairs of the city.

The tow’rs of Troy are fall’n, illuſtrious ſon
Of Atreus, with what words, what reverence
Shall I addreſs thee, not t’o’erleap the bounds
Of modeſt duty, nor to ſink beneath
An honorable welcome?
885
Some there are,
That form themſelves to ſeem, more than to be,
Transgreſſing honeſty: to him that feels
Miſfortune’s rugged hand, full many’ a tongue
Shall drop condolence, tho’ th’ unfeeling heart
890
Knows not the touch of ſorrow; these again
In fortune’s ſummer gale with the like art
Shall dreſs in forc’d ſmiles th’ unwilling face:
But him the penetrating eye ſoon marks,
That in the ſeemly garb of honest zeal

Attempts to cloath his meager blandiſhments.
When firſt in Helen’s cauſe my royal lord
Levied his hoſt, let me not hide the truth,
Notes, other than of muſic, echoed wide
In loud complaints from ſuch as deem’d him raſh,

Hail to thee, chief of Atreus' race,
Returning proud from Troy subdued!
895
How shall I greet thy conquering face?
How nor a fulsome praise obtrude,
Nor stint the meed of gratitude?
For mortal men who fall to ill
Take little heed of open truth,
900
But seek unto its semblance still:
The show of weeping and of ruth
To the forlorn will all men pay,
But of the grief their eyes display,
Nought to the heart doth pierce its way.
905
And, with the joyous, they beguile
Their lips unto a feignèd smile,
And force a joy, unfelt the while;
But he who as a shepherd wise
Doth know his flock, can ne'er misread
910
Truth in the falsehood of his eyes,
Who veils beneath a kindly guise
A lukewarm love in deed.
And thou, our leader—when of yore
Thou badest Greece go forth to war
915
For Helen's sake—I dare avow
That then I held thee not as now;
That to my vision thou didst seem
Dyed in the hues of disesteem.
I held thee for a pilot ill
920
And reckless of thy proper will
Endowing others doomed to die
With vain and forced audacity!
Now from my heart, ungrudgingly,
To those that wrought, this word be said—
925
Well fall the labour ye have sped—
Let time and search, O king, declare
What men within thy city's bound
Were loyal to the kingdom's care,
And who were faithless found.

Auf, König und Herr, der Troja zerstört,
740
Du des Atreus Sohn!
Wie red' ich dich an? Wie ehr' ich dich recht,
Nicht über Gebühr, nicht unter dem Maß,
Das der Freude geziemt?
Viel Sterbliche sind, die trügend den Schein
745
Vorzieh'n, abirrend vom Rechte.
Liebkost in erheuchelter Freundschaft.
755
