For sad it is to send prematurely to destruction an ancient city, a prey of slavery to the spear, ingloriously overthrown in crumbling ashes by an Achaean according to the will of heaven; and for its women to be dragged away captives, alas! alas! both the young and the aged, like horses by their hair, while their vestments are rent about their persons. And the emptied city cries aloud, while its booty is wasted amid confused clamours;—verily I fearfully forebode heavy calamities.

Hear then the mournful, solemn strain:
For dreadful were its fate, should this strong wall,

This ancient, rampir'd city, fall,
And spread its light dust o'er th' encumber'd plain,
Beneath the proud Achaian spear,
Dishonour'd, sunk, the waste of war.
Should the fresh virgin's bloom, the matron's age,

By the fierce victor's firey rage,
'Their robes all rent, their bleeding bosoms bare,
Be drag'd by their looseflowing hair,
Like horses, a reluctant prize;

For pity and sorrow it were that this immemorial town
Should sink to be slave of the spear, to dust and to ashes gone down,
280
By the gods of Achaean worship and arms of Achaean might
Sacked and defiled and dishonoured, its women the prize of the fight—
That, haled by the hair as a steed, their mantles dishevelled and torn,
The maiden and matron alike should pass to the wedlock of scorn!
I hear it arise from the city, the manifold wail of despair—
285
Woe, woe for the doom that shall be—as in grasp of the foeman they fare!

O Leid, stürzte die ehrwürdige Stadt

In den Hades hinab, Beute des Speeres,
Dienstbar, düsterer Asche Raub,
Nach göttlichem Rath schmählich vertilgt
Unter der Macht Achäa's,
Würden die Frau'n weggeschleppt in Knechtschaft,

Alle, jung und alte,
Gleich Kampfrossen am Haar,
Ihr hinflatternd Gewand rings zerfest!
Weit hallt umher die menschenöde Stadt,
Wenn der Entführten Geschrei sterbend sich mischt:

Vor solch graunvollem Loose beb' ich.
Zweite Gegenstrophe.

- Den Gesang trägt wohl der Gesamtchor vor.
