He ruled too, by his prudence, over the opulent populous cities of the Greeks in the Ionian district. And there was at hand an unconquerable power of armed men, and of allies gathered from every nation. But now we, in no dubious way, have to endure the overthrow of these things from the hand of the gods, being terribly beaten down by wars, and by disasters on the deep.
Alas! wretched that I am, having met with this hateful doom beyond all conjecture;-how ruthlessly hath the demon assailed the race of the Persians! What shall I suffer miserable? for the vigour of my limbs fails as I look upon this [aged] company of citizens here before me. O Jove! that the doom of death could enshroud me also along with the men that are departed.
I here before you, alas! alas! meet subject for wailing, hapless have been born an evil to my family, and my father-land.

E'en the proud towns, that rear'd
Sublime along th' Ionian coaſt their tow'rs,
Where wealth her treaſures pours,
1100
Peopled from Greece, his prudent reign rever'd.
With ſuch unconquer'd might
His hardy warriors ſhook th' embattled fields,
Heroes that Perſia yields,
And thoſe from diſtant realms that took their way,
1105
And wedg'd in cloſe array
Beneath his glitt'ring banners claim'd the ſight.
But now theſe glories are no more;
Farewell the big war's plumed pride:
The Gods have cruſh'd this trophied pow'r,
1110
Sunk are our vanquiſh'd arms beneath th' indignant tide.
Ah me, how ſudden have the ſtorms of Fate,
Beyond all thought, all apprehenſion, burſt
On my devoted head!
O Fortune, Fortune!
1115
With what relentleſs fury hath thy hand
Hurl'd deſolation on the Perſian race!
Wo unſupportable!
The tort'ring thought
Of our loſt youth comes ruſhing on my mind,
1120
And ſinks me to the ground.
O Jove, that I
Had died with thoſe brave men that died in ſight!
Your fall, heroic youths, diſtracts my ſoul.

fior di patrie milizie e d'ausiliarie
commiste schiere aveva in sua possanza.
Ma tutto, con sembianza
non ambigua, sconvolto ora dai Superi,
1040
su noi, già in terra vinti, adesso pesa
per la marina offesa.
Ahimè! Misero me, qual destino
odïoso, inatteso, m'oppresse!
Con quale impeto il Dèmone crudo
1045
s'abbatte' su la stirpe dei Persi!
Che farò, tristo me?
Dei ginocchi
mi si stempra il vigor, quando miro
tanti vecchi a me innanzi!
1050
Deh!, Giove,
deh!, se avesse anche me fra gli estinti
seppellito il destino di morte!
Questo io sono: e di pianto son degno,
tristo me!, che alla nostra progenie
di sciagura fui causa, e al mio regno.

Yea, and all the Ionian tract, where the Greek-born inhabitants throng,
And the cities are teeming with gold—Darius was lord of them all,
And, great by his wisdom, he ruled, and ever there came to his call,
905
In stalwart array and unfailing, the warrior chiefs of our land,
And mingled allies from the tribes who bowed to his conquering hand!
But now there are none to gainsay that the gods are against us; we lie
Subdued in the havoc of wreck, and whelmed by the wrath of the sky!
[ Enter Xerxes in disarray.
Alas the day, that I should fall
910
Into this grimmest fate of all,
This ruin doubly unforeseen!
On Persia's land what power of Fate
Descends, what louring gloom of hate?
How shall I bear my teen?
915
My limbs are loosened where they stand,
When I behold this aged band—
Oh God! I would that I too, I,
Among the men who went to die,
Were whelmed in earth by Fate's command!
920
Alas, a lamentable sound,
A cry of ruth! for I am found
A curse to land and lineage,
With none my sorrow to assuage!

Νυχίαν πλάκα

Haec me moverunt, ut quamvis repugnantibus libris
μυχίαν πλάκα
scriberem. Recte autem apteque recessum maris, in quo pugnatum est, simul cum obiecto litore Salaminio commemorari apertum est. Accedit, quod paulo ante Aeschylus dixerat
μυχία Προποντίς
