And what wonder? have not the mighty of the Persians fallen?
I see it, I see it.
Alas! alas!
Woe! woe! woe! heavy indeed is this calamity of ours. Alas! and very much do I sorrow over it.
Woe! woe! woe! woe! again there shall be mingled a black and bloody blow.
This too will I do.
Shriek now in response to me.

Diſmay, and rout, and ruin, ills that wait
On man's afflicted fortune, ſink us down.
At ſuch a fall, ſuch troops of heroes loſt,
How can my ſoul but ſink in deep deſpair!
Ceaſe thy ſad ſtrain.
No: they are bold and daring;
theſe ſad eyes
1250
Beheld their violent and deathful deeds.
Weep, weep their loſs, and lead me to my houſe;
Anſwer my grief with grief, an ill return
1265
O fills for ills.
Yet once more raiſe that ſtrain
Lamenting my misfortunes;
beat thy breaſt,
Strike, heave the groan;
1270
awake the Myſian ſtrain
To notes of loudeſt woe;
rend thy rich robes,
Pluck up thy beard, tear off thy hoary locks,
And bath thine eyes in tears:
1275
thus thro' the ſtreets
Solemn and flow with ſorrow lead my ſteps;
Lead to my houſe, and wail the fate of Perſia.
Yes, once more at thy bidding ſhall the ſtrain
Pour the deep ſorrows of my ſoul;
1280
The ſuff'rings of my bleeding country plain,
And bid the Myſian meaſures roll.
Again the voice of wild deſpair
With ſhrilling ſhrieks ſhall pierce the air;
For high the God of War his flaming creſt
1285
Raiſ'd, with the fleet of Greece ſurrounded,
The haughty arms of Greece with conqueſt bleſt,
And Perſia's wither'd force confounded,
Daſh'd on the dreary beach her heroes ſlain,
Or whelm'd them in the darken'd main.

Dici la moltitudine
dei legni, in fuga spersa?
Strappai su me, nella sciagura, il manto.
Ahimè, ahi, sorte avversa!
1160
Ahi!, ché son poco i gèmiti....
ché son duplici e triplici....
la gioia dei nemici, il nostro lutto.
Infranta, o possa, giaci.
Nudo son di seguaci....
1165
ché gli amici trovâr morte nel flutto.
Piangi, piangi! E alle case volgi il piè.
Ahi sciagura, ahi sciagura! Ahimè, ahimè!
Con un tuo grido al grido mio rispondi.
Misero dono al sofferir dei miseri.
1170
In un solo urlo i gemiti confondi.
Ahimè, ahimè, ahimè!
Grave è questa sciagura,
grave la mia rancura.
Batti la fronte tua, batti per me!
1175
Lagrime spando, levo ululi, ahimè!
Con un tuo grido, al grido mio rispondi!
Il mio dolore, o Re, m'ispira i gemiti!
Atro clamore dei tuoi gridi effondi.
Ahi strazio, ahi strazio!
E il bianco pelo svelliti dal mento!
1185
Con fiero impeto certo! Oh schianto atroce!
Ahimè, riedere in Susa!
Diritto è se tu gemi!
1200
Ahi!, nostra gente, al dolce vivere usa!
Ahi Persia, terra dura per chi riede!

Smitten are we—time tells no heavier blow!
Yea, smitten am I, and my host is all to ruin hurled!
Right resolute they are! I saw disaster unforeseen.
Wail, wail the miserable doom, and to the palace hie!
Smite, smite thy bosom, groan aloud for my calamity!
Yea, beat anew thy breast, ring out the doleful Mysian call!

Cry out for me an answering moan—

Geschlagen!
