Danaos, welcher bisher auf dem Götteraltare stand und nach der Meerseite spähte (721), kündigt das Nahen der Ägyptischen Flotte an und gibt seine Absicht kund Hilfe zu holen. 2. In dem Kommos 742-769 drücken die Danaiden dem Vater ihre Angst aus, während dieser sie zu beruhigen sucht. 3. Danaos bleibt bei seinem Ent- schlusse in der Hoffnung vor dem Ausschiffen der ägyptischen Mann- schaft mit Hilfe zurückzukommen. (Der Dichter braucht eben den Schauspieler, welcher den Danaos gegeben hat, für den Herold der Ägyptiaden.)

Kommos. Jede Strophe und Antistrophe beginnt mit zwei Trimetern, welche, wie es scheint, der κορυφαῖος vorträgt, während die melische Partie der Chor singt. Jeder Strophe und Antistrophe folgen zwei Trimeter des Danaos.

Schol. ἐπεὶ παπυροφάγοι οἱ Αἰγύπτιοι, die Frucht der Papyrosstaude ist der Kornähre nicht gewachsen" d. i. ,,wer sich von Papyros nährt, kann nicht so kräftig sein wie ein Ge- treideesser“. Theophr. π. φυτ. ἱστ. IV 8 (nachdem er den vielfachen Gebrauch des Papyros dargelegt) μάλιστα δὲ καὶ πλείστη βοήθεια πρὸς τὴν τροφὴν ἀπ᾿ αὐτοῦ γίνεται. μασῶνται γὰρ ἅπαντες οἱ ἐν τῇ χώρᾳ τὸν πάπυρον καὶ ὠμὸν καὶ ἑφθὸν καὶ ὀπτόν, καὶ τὸν μὲν χυλὸν καταπίνουσι, τὸ δὲ μάσημα ἐκβάλ- λουσιν, Plin. H. N. XIII 22 8 72 papyrum.. mandunt quoque crudum decoctumque, sucum tantum devo- rantes. Diese Kenntnis verdankte Äschylos wahrscheinlich der Peri- egese des Hekatäos, vgl. zu 964. In Kontrast zu dieser Vorstellung des Dichters steht die Angabe, daß die Ägypter spottweise ἀρτοφάγοι ge- nannt wurden. Das Brot war ein Hauptnahrungsmittel derselben (vgl. Uhlemann, Äg. Alt. II S. 281f., Erman, Ägypten S. 267 ff.). Eras- mus gibt die Erklärung,,fructus papyri haud sustinet spicam gravem“ nach Zenob. Ι 73 ἐπὶ τῶν οὐ δυνα μένων τοῖς ἰδίοις χρῆσθαι καλοῖς, παρόσον ἀσθενὴς ἡ βύβλος πρὸς τὸ φέρειν σίτον. στάχυας γὰρ ἀνατέλ λουσα οὐ τρέφει. Auch die Er- klärung von Stanley „tanto Aegyptii imbelliores sunt Graecis quanto minus robusta est papyrus, eorum cibus, quam frumentum Graecorum, quippe cum non valeat spicam ferre" kann nicht befriedigen. Richtiger Schütz: papyri fructus non est spica praestabilior h. e. extra metaphoram: Aegyptii non sunt Argivis fortiores. Vgl. 964. sogar
