The offspring of Ægyptus is bold and insolent, and insatiate of the fight; and I speak to you who know it:
and possessing black wood-compacted ships they have sailed here with wrath thus far successful, together with a numerous swarthy host.
And they shall find many who have their arms well-hardened to toil in the meridian heat.
But they are wily and deceitful with impure minds, like crows, caring nought for the altars.
if they were hateful both to you and to the gods.
But they are very haughty, maddened with impious rage, of dog-like boldness, in no respect obeying regarding the gods.
But there is a saying that wolves are superior to dogs; and the fruit of the papyrus surpasses not the ear of corn.

Argos, I know, will arm in your defence.
Fatally fierce they are, and on their pride
Deſtruction waits, and neverfated war,
Theſe ſons of old Ægyptus, not to thee
Unknown: E'en now their firmcompacted ſhips
820
Black o'er the angry deep inſulting ride,
Eager to land their ſabletinctur'd hoſts.
And they ſhall find an hoſt, whoſe toil-ſtrung arms f
Relax not in the ſun's meridian heat.
Like obſcene crows, ſpare not the hallow'd altar.
Now fair befall our cauſe, if their mad rage,
Inſulting thee, my child, inſults the Gods.
830
Neither theſe tridents, nor this folemn ſcene
Will awe them to refrain their impious hands.
They ſcorn the Gods, and with unhallow'd force
Ruſh madly on, like ſavage, rav'ning dogs.
But dogs, they ſay, yield to the maſt'ring wolves g ,

And the ſoft reed to the firm ſpiked corn.

Troppo superbi nell' empio furore,
805
gonfi di rabbia, con foia di cani,
rispetto alcuno non hanno dei Numi.
Fama è che piú dei cani i lupi valgano;

Children, take heart; they who decreed to aid
Thy cause will arm for battle, well I ween.
In their wrath they o'ertake us; the prow is deep-dark
In the which they have sped,
And dark is the bench and the crew of the bark!
Yea but a crew as stout they here shall find,
810
And arms well steeled beneath a noon-day sun.
With guile they pursue me, with counsel malign,
And unholy their soul;
815
And as ravens they seize me, unheeding the shrine!
Fair will befall us, children, in this chance,
If thus in wrath they wrong the gods and you.
Unholy and daring and cursed is their ire,
Nor own they control
Of the gods, but like jackals they glut their desire!
Ay, but Come wolf, flee jackal, saith the saw;
Nor can the flax-plant overbear the corn.

Zweite Gegenstrophe.
Maßlos im Troye kühnfrevelnden Uebermuths,
In wahntrunk'ner Gier hündischer Dreistigkeit,
Achten sie nicht der Götter.
Doch lehrt das Sprüchwort, Wölfe seien mächtiger
Als Hunde; Byblos' Staude zwingt die Aehre nicht.

drittes Epeisodion: 1.
