Therefore from our mouths shaded [by boughs] let the honoring prayer fly. Never let pestilence make empty the city of these men: nor let [discord 1 ] make bloody the plain of the land with corses of the natives. And let the flower of youth be uncropped; nor let the paramour of Venus, man-destroying Mars mow the blossom.
And let the altars, at which are aged ministers, abound with venerable priests, and let them blaze [with offerings], that the city may be rightly ruled. Let them reverence mighty Jove, the god of hospitality, supreme, who by hoary law directs fate. And we pray that other rulers of the land be ever born, and that far-darting Diana look upon the labors of women.

To form the gen'rous, bold decree,
And man's rude force diſdain;
To cast on Heav'n's dread Lord their eye,
The terrors of his vengeance fly,
Nor ſcorn our female train :
735
He o'er the impious roof his thunders rolls, c
And aweful in his wrath appalls the guilty ſouls.
Our kindred train, ſuppliants of holy Jove,
Pelaſgia's ſons revere,
And make our wrongs their gen'rous care.

Propitious be each pow'r divine;
For this beneath this ſolemnſhaded grove
Our raptur'd invocations riſe,
And Heav'n ſhall hear the pious ſtrains.

Nor peſtilence with pois'nous breath,
Waſte your thin towns with livid death :

Su via, dai labbri nostri, all'ombra volino
delle supplici rame,
queste mie devotissime
preci. Non mai la fame

renda questa città deserta d'uomini,
né cittadina guerra
mai di caduti insanguini la terra.
Non mietuto rimanga il fior dei giovani:
né Marte, d'Afrodite

l'omicida amator, strappi il rigoglio
delle giovani vite.
E l'are, asilo dei canuti, accolgano,
al buon consiglio intenti,
i vecchi. Essi dirigano

con savî ordinamenti
questa città che Giove prima venera,
che gli ospiti protegge:
Argo ei diriga ognor con savia legge.
E di quanti altri beni il suolo germina

e vegli ai parti delle donne Artèmide,
la Dea saettatrice.

Thus, through the boughs that shade our lips, fly forth in air,
Fly forth, O eager prayer!
May never pestilence efface
This city's race,
Nor be the land with corpses strewed,

Nor stained with civic blood!
The stem of youth, unpluckt, to manhood come,
Nor Ares rise from Aphrodité's bower,
The lord of death and bane, to waste our youthful flower.
