But the mortals who then were dwellers in the land, were seized in their minds by pale fear, beholding an unwonted sight, an intractable heifer mingled with a mortal, in part a heifer, and in part again a woman, and they were astonished at the prodigy. And then who was it in truth who soothed the much-wandering wretched Io, driven by the brize?
Jove, lord of ceaseless time but the violence [of Juno] ceases by unwasted strength, and by divine influence, but she drops the mournful modesty of tears. But having received the divine load, in true story, she produced her blameless son,
all-happy for length of time; whence all the earth exclaims, this is truly the offspring of life-giving Jove: for who could have made to cease the pest inflicted by wily Juno? this is the work of Jove; and saying that that race is sprung from Epaphus you will hit the truth.

The race that then poſſeſs'd the land,
Struck with aſtoniſhment and pale affright,

Beheld the ſtrange, prodigious ſight:
Diſdaining to be touch'd ſhe trod the ſtrand,
The likeneſs of the lowing race
Now ſoft'ning ſweet to virgin grace a :
They ſaw, and trembled. All her toils at laſt,
650
Her wand'rings wild, her tortures paſt,
What gentle handEternal Lord 'twas thine;
Thy gentle hand, thy pow'r divine b
Sooth, ſoftly ſooth'd her frantic fear,
And from her glowing cheek wip'd ſorrow's modeſt tear.
655
Now thy pleaſing force employ,
All be love, and all be joy.
Rifing from the ſweet embrace,
Worthy of his radiant race,
Smiles the auſpicious boy.
660
Time prepares to ſtamp his name
Glorious in the roll of fame;
Earth, thro' ev'ry raptur'd ſcene,
Hails th' ætherial ſon of Jove.
Who cou'd charm Heav'n's angry queen?
665
Who her hoſtile hate remove ?
This the deed of Jove alone,
And this his genuine ſon.

And they within the land
620
With terror shook and wanned,
So strange the sight they saw, and were afraid—
A wild twy-natured thing, half heifer and half maid.
Whose hand was laid at last on Io, thus forlorn,
With many roamings worn?
625
Who bade the harassed maiden's peace return?
Zeus, lord of time eterne.
Yea, by his breath divine, by his unscathing strength,
She lays aside her bane,
And softened back to womanhood at length
630
Sheds human tears again.
Then, quickened with Zeus' veritable seed,
A progeny she bare,
A stainless babe, a child of heavenly breed,
Of life and fortune fair.
635
His is the life of life—so all men say,—
His is the seed of Zeus.
Who else had power stern Hera's craft to stay,
Her vengeful curse to loose?
Yea, all from Zeus befel!

And rightly wouldst thou tell
That we from Epaphus, his child, were born:
