Aeschylus Supplices 565

Johann Jakob Christian Donner (Translator)

Das Volk, damals im Lande heimisch dort,
Bleiches Grausen erfaßt' es,
Da solch seltsamer Anblick
Sich bot, die grauenvolle Menschenmißgestalt,
Zur Hälfte Kuh,
545
Zur Hälfte Weib; Alles stand verwundert.
Wer, sich erbarmend, labte da
Jo, die unglückselige, wild
Umgetriebne von Wahnsinn?
Vierte Strophe.

But the mortals who then were dwellers in the land, were seized in their minds by pale fear, beholding an unwonted sight, an intractable heifer mingled with a mortal, in part a heifer, and in part again a woman, and they were astonished at the prodigy. And then who was it in truth who soothed the much-wandering wretched Io, driven by the brize?
