These things are much valued by us, to have obtained a pitying patron; but send with us attendants of the citizens to point out the way, that we may find the altars before the temples of the country's gods, and the seats of those who guard the city, and that there may be safety to us proceeding through the city but the appearance of our form is not the same [with yours]: for the Nile nourishes a race different from Inachus; we must take care lest boldness produce fear 1 : and in truth one has slain a friend through ignorance.

This reverend, this benevolent regard
To ſtrangers we receive with grateful honour.
But from thy train ſend with me ſome t' attend,
To guide me to the altars of your Gods,
570
The guardians of your ſtate, and to their ſhrines,
With ſafety thro' your ſtreets; for much unlike
Our form, our garb to yours; nor does our Nile
See on its banks a race like thoſe, that tread...
The verdant borders of your Inachus:
575
Hence inſolence may dare the rude affront;
The ſtranger friend by the friend's hand has bled.

nutron diversa stirpe. Or dall'ardire
nascer potrebbe uno sgomento: spesso
per non sapere, alcun l'amico uccise.

To us, beyond gifts manifold it is
To find a champion thus compassionate;
540
Yet send with me attendants, of thy folk,
Rightly to guide me, that I duly find
Each altar of your city's gods that stands
Before the fane, each dedicated shrine;
And that in safety through the city's ways
545
I may pass onwards: all unlike to yours
The outward semblance that I wear—the race
That Nilus rears is all dissimilar
To that of Inachus. Keep watch and ward
Lest heedlessness bring death: full oft, I ween,
550
Friend hath slain friend, not knowing whom he slew.

470
Verhüte, daß mein Hoffen keine Furcht gebiert;

Ζη παροίχομαι vgl. Eur. Med. 995 δύστανε, μοίρας ὅσον παροίχῃ (,,wie sehr täuschest du dich in dem, was das Schicksal dir bestimmt hat").
