Thou canst not say this time that I began
And brought this on me by some taunting word.
But, so you’d suffer me, I would declare
The right both for my sister and my sire.

T slew thy father ; yet not I alone,
I had the hand of justice to assist m(
Thou hast no plea for bitterness like this ;
Thou canst not say that I provoked thee to it.
I have been silent : had I leave to speak
I could defend an injured father's cause,
And tell thee wherefore Iphigenia fell.

Thou hadst addressed me always thy free speech

Had ne'er offended.

Thou wilt not say this harshness was provoked
Now by my harsh reproach. But, grant me leave,
Of my dead father, and my sister's death,
As truth and reason prompt me, I will speak.

552-553. mvp-comment-249-1 έρε ἐρεῖς . . λυπηρόν] The death of Iphigenia was a painful subject to Electra.

556-557. mvp-comment-250-1 εἰ δὲ μ᾿ ὧδ' ἀεὶ λόγους | ἐξήρχες] 'If your speeches to me were always tuned in that key.' με is governed κατὰ σύνεσιν by the whole phrase, as equivalent to ὧδε προσηγόρευες, ἐξάρχειν is used as in ἐξάρχειν μέλος. Electra is imagined as sounding the note to which Clytemnestra responds.
