Et quand même il luy arriveroit d'étaler ſur la Scene des incidens véritables, il n'en meriteroit pas moins le nom de Poëte, car rien n'empêche que les incidens, qui font arrivez véritablement, n'ayent toute la vray-ſemblance & toute la poſſibilité que l'art demande, & qui font qu'il en peut être regardé comme l'Auteur & le Poëte.

nor is he the less a Poet, though the incidents of his fable should chance to be such as have actually happened; for nothing hinders, but that some true events may possess that probability 1 , the invention of which entitles him to the name of Poet.

ὥστ᾽ οὐ πάντως – ἀντέχεσθαι: dicta haec videntur contra eos qui ante Aristotelem editis libris contrariam sententiam pronuntiaverant: hanc enim opinionem diligenter et copiose et paene dixerim acerbe refutavit. conf.
