Be persuaded by me, so as not to bear it hardly: for you have not been conquered, but the cause in truth fell out with equal votes, not for your disgrace. Besides clear testi monies from Jove were present, and he who gave the oracle, he himself bore witness, that Orestes having done these things should not suffer ill. But do not you let fall your heavy wrath on this land, be not enraged, nor cause sterility, sending forth drops from your lungs, dire darts consuming the seed. For I most justly promise to you, that you, seated at the shining hearths, shall possess temples and shrines in a just land, honoured by these citizens.

épargnez-vous de lourds san-
glots.

Wounds your inſulted honour:

The lots came equal, ſo diſpos'd by truth,

Flow'd ſplendid ſigns: he gave the oracle,
He added his high teſt, that for the deed

Breath not then

Shall willingly receive you, raiſe your ſeats
High at their blazing hearths, and, with deep awe
Impreſt, pay reverend honours to your pow'r.

Nay, bow ye to my words, chafe not nor moan:
Ye are not worsted nor disgraced; behold,
915
With balanced vote the cause had issue fair,
Nor in the end did aught dishonour thee.
But thus the will of Zeus shone clearly forth,
And his own prophet-god avouched the same,
Orestes slew: his slaying is atoned.
920
Therefore I pray you, not upon this land
Shoot forth the dart of vengeance; be appeased,
Nor blast the land with blight, nor loose thereon
Drops of eternal venom, direful darts
Wasting and marring nature's seed of growth.
925
For I, the queen of Athens' sacred right,
Do pledge to you a holy sanctuary
Deep in the heart of this my land, made just
By your indwelling presence, while ye sit
Hard by your sacred shrines that gleam with oil
930
Of sacrifice, and by this folk adored.

Folgt meinem Rath, ertragt es ohne schweren Groll!
760
770
Ein Heiligthum an rechter Stätte werden soll,
Wo ihr an Opferherden thront in Strahlenglanz,
Von dieses Landes Bürgern hochverherrlichet.

Commentary

Commentary on Aeschylus: Eumenides (Aeschylus. Eumenides. Sidgwick, Arthur, editor. Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1887.)

719. μὴ τυχούσα , of course conditional: if I do not...

720. ὁμιλήσω , will haunt, will visit.

Euripides says (Alk. 12) that Apollo cheated (δολώσας) the Fates; and (1. 728) Aeschylus tells us it was by making them drunk. The crude barbarism of the tale points to its great age.

725. σέβοντ' , pious. Euripides (Alk. 10) calls Admetos similarly ὅσιος ἀνήρ.

The common use is to employ the opt. in past general conditions, the subjunctive where the verb, as here (έστι understood with δίκαιον), is primary. But it is a special idiom to employ the optative in maxims and other statements of a universal character, where the verb is to apply to all time: or to put it otherwise where the idea of time is absent. Thus Soph. So Ant. 666, Trach. 93, Ai. 521, 1344. So Thuc.

727. διανομάς , ordinances: the MSS. have δαίμονas, but the Scholiast on Alkestis 12 quotes the line with διανομάς; and this certain emendation was thence made by Cobet. δαίμονας was suggested by θεάς in the next line.

729. σύ . τοι is scornfully repeated. οὐκ ἔχουσα τῆς δίκης τέλος, 'failing to win thy cause' is the general sense. τέλος literally means the decision, as in 1. 243; and having the decision' means winning it.

730. ἐμεῖ . is future.

731. καθιππάζει , characteristic vigorous figure, override, i. e. overbear.

μὴ τυχούσα , of course conditional: if I do not...

ὁμιλήσω , will haunt, will visit.

mvp-sidgwick-335-1-1 Pheres was father of Admetos: and the reference is to the famous and beautiful story of Alkestis, in Euripides' version as follows:-Apollo having served in the house of Admetos, by order of Zeus, and being well treated, repaid his debt by begging off Admetos' life from the Fates, on condition of his finding a substitute. After trying all his friends he found none but Alkestis, his wife, ready to die for him. See l. 172

Euripides says (Alk. 12) that Apollo cheated (δολώσας) the Fates; and ( l. 728

διανομάς , ordinances: the MSS. have δαίμονas, but the Scholiast on Alkestis 12 quotes the line with διανομάς; and this certain emendation was thence made by Cobet. δαίμονας was suggested by θεάς in the next line.

σύ . τοι is scornfully repeated. οὐκ ἔχουσα τῆς δίκης τέλος, failing to win thy cause is the general sense. τέλος literally means the decision, as in l. 243

; and having the decision' means winning it.

ἐμεῖ . is future.

καθιππάζει , characteristic vigorous figure, override, i. e. overbear.
