Be persuaded by me, so as not to bear it hardly: for you have not been conquered, but the cause in truth fell out with equal votes, not for your disgrace. Besides clear testi monies from Jove were present, and he who gave the oracle, he himself bore witness, that Orestes having done these things should not suffer ill. But do not you let fall your heavy wrath on this land, be not enraged, nor cause sterility, sending forth drops from your lungs, dire darts consuming the seed. For I most justly promise to you, that you, seated at the shining hearths, shall possess temples and shrines in a just land, honoured by these citizens.

épargnez-vous de lourds san-
glots.

Wounds your inſulted honour:

The lots came equal, ſo diſpos'd by truth,

Flow'd ſplendid ſigns: he gave the oracle,
He added his high teſt, that for the deed

Breath not then
Your heavy vengeance on this land; reſtrain
Your indignation; o'er theſe ſick'ning fields

Shall willingly receive you, raiſe your ſeats
High at their blazing hearths, and, with deep awe
Impreſt, pay reverend honours to your pow'r.

Nay, bow ye to my words, chafe not nor moan:
Ye are not worsted nor disgraced; behold,
915
With balanced vote the cause had issue fair,
Nor in the end did aught dishonour thee.
But thus the will of Zeus shone clearly forth,
And his own prophet-god avouched the same,
Orestes slew: his slaying is atoned.
920
Therefore I pray you, not upon this land
Shoot forth the dart of vengeance; be appeased,
Nor blast the land with blight, nor loose thereon
Drops of eternal venom, direful darts
Wasting and marring nature's seed of growth.
925
For I, the queen of Athens' sacred right,
Do pledge to you a holy sanctuary
Deep in the heart of this my land, made just
By your indwelling presence, while ye sit
Hard by your sacred shrines that gleam with oil
930
Of sacrifice, and by this folk adored.

Folgt meinem Rath, ertragt es ohne schweren Groll!
760
770
Ein Heiligthum an rechter Stätte werden soll,
Wo ihr an Opferherden thront in Strahlenglanz,
Von dieses Landes Bürgern hochverherrlichet.

Commentary

Commentary on Aeschylus: Eumenides (Aeschylus. Eumenides. Sidgwick, Arthur, editor. Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1887.)

796. ἀληθῶς , ‘truly:' i. e. there was no fraud or evil intent, but the honest decision.

γάρ , elliptical as usual, the ellipse easily supplied 'but (you lost) for there was witness,' etc.

799. ὡς , regular poetic use for ὥστε.

802. δαιμόνων σταλάγματα , if right, must mean immortal venom: the word δαιμόνων emphasising the supernatural and terrible power of the blighting drops. The word has been much emended, the best suggestion being Wakefield's πλευμόνων or λαιμάτων : for, as Hartung says, the expressions in this speech are largely determined by the Chorus, and the corresponding phrase is (1.784) καρδίας σταλαγμόν.

804. ὑπίσχομαι , promise, for the common form ὑπισχνοῦμαι, somewhat as οἴχομαι οἰχνέω, λήθω λανθάνω, φεύγω φυγγάνω, πεύθομαι πυνθάνομαι. [Heath, followed by Herm. Schöm., read ἐνδίκους : but the MSS. gen. is finer: Athens, as the Athenians were fond of boasting, was the ' righteous' land: so O. C. 1006 εἴ τις γῆ θεοὺς ἐπίσταται τιμαῖς σεβίζειν, ἥδε τοῦθ᾽ ὑπερφέρει. So again below 11. 869, 920.

805. κευθμῶνας , cavern, grot. There is a chasm or hole in the rock, with a dark spring of water, on the N. E. side of the Areiopagos. This is no doubt the place constantly referred to as the κευθμών or θάλαμοι (1. 1004) of the Eumenides: and explains the phrases κατὰ γᾶς σύμεναι (1. 1007), τοὺς ἔνερθε καὶ κατὰ χθονὸς τόπους (1. 1023), γᾶς ὑπὸ κεύθεσι (1. 1036). The clearest reference is Eurip. Elektr. 1270, where he speaks of the Eum., defeated in this trial of Orestes, as 'entering a chasm of the earth close by the hill itself:' δειναὶ μὲν οὖν θεαὶ τῷδ᾽ ἄχει πεπληγμέναι πάγον παρ᾿ αὐτὸν χάσμα δύσονται χθονός.

806. λιπαροθρόνοισι , ‘with shining seats' [not with oil as Müller, etc., for the regular libations to the Eumenides were honey and water, fully detailed in Soph. O. C. 470-481], but merely bright or splendid marble seats for the great goddesses.

mvp-comment-246-1 οὐκ ἀτιμίᾳ] This is an answer to the complaint ἐγὼ δ᾽ ἄτιμος, v. 750. It is repeated in 788, οὐκ ἔστ' ἄτιμοι.

The sense is, ἀλλ' αὐτὸς ᾿Απόλλων ἀπέλυσεν Ορέστην αἰτίας. As the προφήτης of Ζεὺς (sup. 19) Apollo gave his testimony on supreme authority. - ὁ πείσας for ὁ θήσας is restored from v. 84, καὶ γὰρ κτανεῖν σ᾽ ἔπεισα κ.τ.λ.

mvp-comment-248-1 ὡς ἔχειν] here = ἵνα ἔχοι—the testimony was given that Orestes might be unharmed by the consequences of his crime. But it might also express the fact, ὥστε οὐκ ἔχει.

mvp-comment-249-1 δαιμόνων is corrupt. Perhaps (from v. 752) καρδίας, οι λαιμάτων ( Αr. Αν. 1562 ), or even δαίμονες, ‘as hostile powers.' - αἰχμάς, influences; the word seems used in reference to ἀφεῖσαι, from the throwing of darts.

mvp-comment-250-1 ἐνδίκου] made just by your residence among the citizens, and by the awe you inspire. The ancient rite of pouring oil (as the Hindus still pour ghee) on stones and altars is alluded to in λιπαροθρόνοις.

mvp-sidgwick-381-1-1 Athena soothes them, and persuades them not to execute the threats, ll. 780-782

.

δαιμόνων σταλάγματα , if right, must mean immortal venom: the word δαιμόνων emphasising the supernatural and terrible power of the blighting drops. The word has been much emended, the best suggestion being Wakefield's πλευμόνων or λαιμάτων : for, as Hartung says, the expressions in this speech are largely determined by the Chorus, and the corresponding phrase is ( l. 784

mvp-sidgwick-383-1-1 Corroding stings, devastating the seed; a fine characteristic line. It is best thus to make the gen. dependent on ἀνημέρους : the latter word meaning wild, waste, and here, by a common stretch of usage, applied not to the αἰχμάς but to their effects. For the masc. form βρωτήρας with fem. αἰχμάς compare

Ag. 664 , Ο. Τ. 80 : see note on l. 186 .

ὑπίσχομαι , promise, for the common form ὑπισχνοῦμαι, somewhat as οἴχομαι οἰχνέω, λήθω λανθάνω, φεύγω φυγγάνω, πεύθομαι πυνθάνομαι. [Heath, followed by Herm. Schöm., read ἐνδίκους : but the MSS. gen. is finer: Athens, as the Athenians were fond of boasting, was the righteous land: so O. C. 1006

So again below ll. 869, 920 .

κευθμῶνας , cavern, grot. There is a chasm or hole in the rock, with a dark spring of water, on the N. E. side of the Areiopagos. This is no doubt the place constantly referred to as the κευθμών or θάλαμοι ( l. 1004

) of the Eumenides: and explains the phrases κατὰ γᾶς σύμεναι ( l. 1007 ), τοὺς ἔνερθε καὶ κατὰ χθονὸς τόπους ( l. 1023 ), γᾶς ὑπὸ κεύθεσι ( l. 1036 ). The clearest reference is Eurip. Elektr. 1270, where he speaks of the Eum., defeated in this trial of Orestes, as entering a chasm of the earth close by the hill itself: δειναὶ μὲν οὖν θεαὶ τῷδ᾽ ἄχει πεπληγμέναι πάγον παρ᾿ αὐτὸν χάσμα δύσονται χθονός.

λιπαροθρόνοισι , with shining seats [not with oil as Müller, etc., for the regular libations to the Eumenides were honey and water, fully detailed in Soph. O. C. 470-481 ], but merely bright or splendid marble seats for the great goddesses.
