Ye captive maids, ye garnishers of the palace, since ye are present as my associates in this suppliant procession, be my counsellors in this matter: when I pour these funereal drink-offerings on the tomb, how shall I say what is well-pleasing? how am I to make my prayer to my father? Shall I say that I bring them from a dear wife to a dear husband? from my mother, forsooth 1
? I dare not say it; and I know not what to say, as I pour this thick libation on the tomb of my father. Or shall I say this saying, as is the custom of mortals, that he would recompense those who send these chaplets and this gift with a [gift] worthy their misdeeds 2
or, in silence, ingloriously, even as my father perished, am I, pouring this out, a draught drunk by the earth, to move backwards 3
, like one who casts forth offscourings, as I fling from me the vessel, with eyes never looking back? In this deliberation of mine, my friends, do ye be sharers, for we hold a common object of abhorrence in the house. Hide not your feelings within your heart, through fear of any one. For Destiny awaits alike the free man, and him that is mastered by the hand of another. Tell me if thou knowest aught better than this?

Staub,
werf hinter mich die Schalen, abgewandten Blicks,
und gehe - Schmutzgewässer, das Besudelung
von einem Haus gewaschen, giefst man also weg.
100 In dieser Überlegung, bitte, steht mir bei;

Handmaidens, orderers of the palace-halls,
Since at my side ye come, a suppliant train,
Companions of this offering, counsel me
As best befits the time: for I, who pour
Upon the grave these streams funereal,
105
With what fair word can I invoke my sire?
Shall I aver Behold, I bear these gifts
From well-loved wife unto her well-loved lord,
When 'tis from her, my mother, that they come?
I dare not say it: of all words I fail
110
Wherewith to consecrate unto my sire
These sacrificial honours on his grave.
Or shall I speak this word, as mortals use—
Give back, to those who send these coronals,
Full recompense—of ills for acts malign?
115
Or shall I pour this draught for Earth to drink,
Sans word or reverence, as my sire was slain,
And homeward pass with unreverted eyes,
Casting the bowl away, as one who flings
The household cleansings to the common road?
120
Be art and part, O friends, in this my doubt,
Even as ye are in that one common hate
Whereby we live attended: fear ye not
The wrath of any man, nor hide your word
Within your breast: the day of death and doom
125
Awaits alike the freeman and the slave.
Speak, then, if aught thou know'st to aid us more.

Geleiterinnen, also gebt mir euren Rath.
In diesen Zweifeln rathet mir, geliebte Frau'n.
Denn uns verfolgt ja gleicher Haß in diesem Haus.
Verschließt es nicht im Herzen, irgendwie besorgt.
105
