Libation Bearers Perseus (Aeschylus, Volume 2. Smyth, Herbert Weir, translator. London; New York: William Heinemann; G.P. Putnam's Sons, 1926. (Modernized by Perseus.)) — 935-962a focus
Chorus
As to Priam and his sons justice came at last in crushing retribution, so to Agamemnon’s house came a twofold lion, twofold slaughter.
1
935
The exile, the suppliant of
Pytho
, has fulfilled his course to the utmost, justly urged on by counsels from the gods.
940
Chorus
Oh raise a shout of triumph over the escape of our master’s house from its misery and the wasting of its wealth by two who were unclean,
its grievous fortune!
945
Chorus
And he has come whose part is the crafty vengeance of stealthy attack, and in the battle his hand was guided by her who is in very truth daughter of Zeus, breathing murderous wrath on her foes.
We mortals aim true to the mark when we call her Justice.
2
950
Chorus
Oh raise a shout of triumph over the escape of our master’s house from its misery and the wasting of its wealth by two who were unclean,
its grievous fortune!
Chorus
The commands proclaimed loudly by Loxias, tenant of the mighty cavern shrine of
Parnassus
, assail with guileless guile
the mischief now become inveterate. May the divine word prevail that so I may not serve the wicked!
3
It is right to revere the rule of heaven.
960
Chorus
Look, the light has come, and I am freed from the cruel curb that restrained our household. House, rise up! You have lain too long prostrate on the ground.
Chorus
But soon time that accomplishes all will pass the portals of our house, and then all pollution will be expelled from the hearth by cleansing rites that drive out calamity. The dice of fortune will turn as they fall and lie
965
with faces all lovely to behold, favorably disposed to whoever stays in our house.
970
Chorus
Look, the light has come,
and I am freed from the cruel curb that restrained our household. House, rise up! You have lain too long prostrate on the ground.

CLYTEMNESTRA
(coming forward).—What is the matter? what meant the outcry thou art raising in the house ?
DOMESTIC
I tell thee that the dead are slaying the living.
CLYTEMNESTRA
Ah me! I apprehend thy meaning from thy dark expressions. By treachery shall we perish exactly as we slew. Some one hand me a deathly axe with all speed. Let us see whether we are to be victors or vanquished; for unto that crisis of this evil am I come.
ORESTES
(bursting in.)—Thee too am I seeking-this wretch here has enough.
CLYTEMNESTRA
Ah me ! thou art dead, dearest Aegisthus.
ORESTES
Lovest thou the man ? then shalt thou lie in the same tomb, and thou shalt never desert him in death.
CLYTEMNESTRA
Hold thee, my son! and revere this breast on which thou full often slumbering wast wont at the same time to suck with thy gums the well-nourishing milk.
ORESTES
Pylades, how am I to act? is reverence to restrain me from slaying my mother ?

And doſt thou love the man? In the ſame tomb
Shalt thou be laid, nor e'en in death forſake him.

Ah, ſtay thy hand, my son: my child, my child,

What ſhall I do, my Pylades? Restrain'd
By filial reverence, dread to kill my mother?

Diener.
Tot ist Aigisthos. Macht mir auf. Beeilet euch,
schwebt,
fährt heut vergeltend nieder und zerschmettert sie.
Klytaimestra kommt aus der Thür des Frauengemachs.
Klytaimestra.
885
Was ist gescheh'n? Was soll der Ruf an meiner Thür?
Diener.
Vernimm's: die Toten morden die Lebendigen.
Klytaimestra.
Geschwinde her das Mordbeil. Sehen wollen wir,
890
Klytaimestra.
Weh mir, Aigisthos, liebster Gatte, bist du hin!
Orestes.
Du liebst ihn; wohl, du sollst auch in dasselbe Grab
895
Klytaimestra.
Mein Sohn, halt inne. Schone diese Brust, mein Kind.
An diesem Herzen hast du schlummernd oft geruht,
Orestes.
Was thun? Darf ich die Mutter schonen, Pylades?
Pylades.

O woe, O woe, my lord is done to death!
Woe, woe, and woe again, Ægisthus gone!
Hasten, fling wide the doors, unloose the bolts
Of the queen's chamber. O for some young strength
980
To match the need! but aid availeth nought
To him laid low for ever. Help, help, help!
Sure to deaf ears I shout, and call in vain
To slumber ineffectual. What ho!
The queen! how fareth Clytemnestra's self?
985
Her neck too, hers, is close upon the steel,
And soon shall sink, hewn thro' as justice wills.
[
Enter Clytemnestra.
Clytemnestra.
What ails thee, raising this ado for us?
Slave.
I say the dead are come to slay the living.
Clytemnestra.
Alack, I read thy riddles all too clear—
990
We slew by craft and by like craft shall die.
Swift, bring the axe that slew my lord of old;
I'll know anon or death or victory—
So stands the curse, so I confront it here.
[
Enter Orestes, his sword dropping with blood.
Orestes.
Thee too I seek: for him what's done will serve.
995
Clytemnestra.
Woe, woe! Ægisthus, spouse and champion, slain!
Orestes.
What, lov'st the man? then in his grave lie down,
Be his in death, desert him nevermore!
Clytemnestra.
Stay, child, and fear to strike. O son, this breast
Pillowed thine head full oft, while, drowsed with sleep,
1000
Thy toothless mouth drew mother's-milk from me.
Orestes.
Can I my mother spare? speak, Pylades.
Pylades.
