These things of which thou speakest, my child, are more precious than gold, and surpassing e'en Hyperborean happiness, for thou art in anguish 5 . But [enough], for the clang of this double scourge comes upon me: the protectors of these [children] are already beneath the earth: but the hands of the odious pair that rule are polluted; on their children too it bath fallen heavier 6 .

But from this ſcourge a double claſh is heard l ;
One from th' aſſiſtant pow’rs beneath the earth;

Chi poteva recarci soccorso
è sotterra; e le mani sono empie
dei signori odïosi che imperano:

e piú crude sui figli imperversano.

O child, forbear! things all too high thou sayest.
440
Easy, but vain, thy cry!
A boon above all gold is that thou prayest,
An unreached destiny,
As of the blessed land that far aloof
Beyond the north wind lies;
445
Yet doth your double prayer ring loud reproof;
A double scourge of sighs
Awakes the dead; th' avengers rise, though late;
Blood stains the guilty pride
Of the accursed who rule on earth, and Fate

Stands on the children's side.

Traun, köstlicher, Kind, als Schäße des Golds,
Ja, seliger, als hyperborisches Glück,
375
Ist, was du dir klagend erbittest.
Doch doppelt umsaust dumpfhallender Schlag
Der Verhaften, befleckt der entsegliche Mord;
380
Und das Bitterste dulden die Kinder!
Vierte Strophe.

Cho. El. Kor. Or. Cho, El. Kor. Or. Cho. El. Kor. Or. Cho. El.
