Aeschylus Libation Bearers 1010

Theodore Alois Buckley (Translator)

Did he or did he not do it? but this vest bears witness to me that the sword of Aegisthus stained it. The stain of the gore too coincides with the time [of the deed,] damaging the various hues of the embroidery. Now I praise him 3 , now upon the spot I bemoan him; and addressing his vestment, that wrought my father's fall, I grieve for the offences and the suffering, and the entire family, having the unenviable pollutions of this victory which I have achieved.

War sie auch schuldig? Wirklich schuldig? Das
Gewand
an mein Geschlecht, an alles, was es that und litt,
und meines Sieges Blutschuld fällt mir schwer aufs
Herz.

Did she the deed or not? this robe gives proof,
Imbrued with blood that bathed Ægisthus' sword:
Look, how the spurted stain combines with time
1125
To blur the many dyes that once adorned
Its pattern manifold! I now stand here,
Made glad, made sad with blood, exulting, wailing—
Hear, thou woven web that slew my sire!
I grieve for deed and death and all my home—
1130
Victor, pollution's damnèd stain for prize.

Beklag' ich meine That, mein Leid, mein ganzes Haus!
