I pray the gods a deliverance from these toils, a remedy 1
for my year-long watch, in which, couching on my elbows 2
on the roofs of the Atreidae, like a dog, I have contemplated the host 3
of the nightly stars, and the bright potentates that bear winter and summer to mortals, conspicuous in the firmament. And now I am watching for the signal of the beacon, the blaze of fire that brings a voice from Troy, and tidings of its capture; for thus strong in hope is the woman's heart, of manly counsel 4
. And whilst I have a night-bewildered and dew-drenched couch 1
, not visited by dreams, for fear, in place of sleep, stands at my side, so that I cannot firmly close my eyelids in slumber. And when I think to sing or whistle, preparing 2
this the counter-charm of song against sleep, then do I mourn, sighing over the sad condition of this house, that is not, as of yore, most excellently administered. But now, may there be a happy release from my toils, as the fire of joyous tidings appears through the gloom! Oh hail! thou lamp of night, thou that displayest a light like as the day, and the marshalling of many dances in Argos, on account of this event 3
. Ho! ho! I will give a signal distinctly to the wife of Agamemnon, that she, having arisen with all speed from her couch, may raise aloud a joyous shout in welcome to this beacon, if indeed the city of Ilion is taken, as the beacon-light stands forth 4
announcing; and I myself will dance a prelude. For I will count the throws 6
of my lord that have fallen well, mine own 5
, since this kindling of the beacon-light has cast me thrice six. May it then befall me to grasp with this hand of mine the friendly hand of the sovereign of this palace on his arrival. But for the rest I am silent; a mighty ox hath come upon my tongue 7
: but the house itself, could it find a voice, would tell most plainly. Thus I readily speak to them that know, and for such as know not I have no memory.

So gebeut erwartungsvoll

WATCHMAN
I PRAY the gods deliverance from these toils,
Release from year-long watch, which, couch'd aloft
On these Atreidan roofs, dog-like, I keep,
Marking the stars which nightly congregate;
And those bright potentates who bring to mortals
Winter and summer, signal in the sky,
1 What time they wane I note, their risings too.
And for the beacon's token now I watch,
The blaze of fire, bearing from Troy a tale,
2 Tidings of capture; for so proudly hopes 1
A woman's heart, with manly counsel fraught.
Dew-drenched and restless is my nightly couch,
By dreams unvisited, for at my side,
Fear stands, in place of sleep, nor suffers me
Soundly, in slumberous rest, my lids to close.
Then when I think to chant a strain, or hum,
(Such against sleep my tuneful counter-charm,)
Moaning, I wail the sorrows of this house,
Not wisely governed as in days of old.
But may glad respite from these toils be mine,
When fire, joy's herald, through the darkness gleams.
He suddenly beholds the beacon-light and starts to his feet.
Hail lamp of night, forth shining like the day,
Of many a festive dance in Argos' land,
Through joy at this event, the harbinger.
Hurrah! Hurrah! To Agamemnon's queen,
Thus with shrill cry I give th' appointed sign.
That from her couch up-rising with all speed,
She in the palace jubilant may lift
The joyous shout, to gratulate this torch,
If Ilion's citadel in truth is ta'en,
As, shining forth, this beacon-fire proclaims.
The joyous prelude I myself will dance,
For to my lords good fortune I shall score,
Now that this torch hath cast me triple six.
Well! be it mine, when comes this mansion's lord,
In this my hand his much-loved hand to hold !
The rest I speak not; o'er my tongue hath passed
An ox with heavy tread: the house itself,
Had it a voice, would tell the tale full clear ;
And I, with those who know, am fain to speak,
With others, who know nothing, I forget.

I pray the gods to quit me of my toils,
1
To close the watch I keep, this livelong year;
For as a watch-dog lying, not at rest,
Propped on one arm, upon the palace-roof
Of Atreus' race, too long, too well I know
5
The starry conclave of the midnight sky,
Too well, the splendours of the firmament,
The lords of light, whose kingly aspect signs—
What time they set or climb the sky in turn—
The year's divisions, bringing frost or fire.
10
And now, as ever, am I set to mark
When shall stream up the glow of signal-flame,
The bale-fire bright, and tell its Trojan tale—
Troy town is ta'en: such issue holds in hope
She in whose woman's breast beats heart of man.
15
Thus upon mine unrestful couch I lie,
Bathed with the dews of night, unvisited
By dreams—ah me!—for in the place of sleep
Stands Fear as my familiar, and repels
The soft repose that would mine eyelids seal.
20
And if at whiles, for the lost balm of sleep,
I medicine my soul with melody
Of trill or song—anon to tears I turn,
Wailing the woe that broods upon this home,
Not now by honour guided as of old.
25
But now at last fair fall the welcome hour
That sets me free, whene'er the thick night glow
With beacon-fire of hope deferred no more.
All hail!
[ A beacon-light is seen reddening the distant sky.
Fire of the night, that brings my spirit day,
30
Shedding on Argos light, and dance, and song,
Greetings to fortune, hail!
Let my loud summons ring within the ears
Of Agamemnon's queen, that she anon
Start from her couch and with a shrill voice cry
35
A joyous welcome to the beacon-blaze,
For Ilion's fall; such fiery message gleams
From yon high flame; and I, before the rest,
Will foot the lightsome measure of our joy;
For I can say, My master's dice fell fair—
40
Behold! the triple sice, the lucky flame!
Now be my lot to clasp, in loyal love,
The hand of him restored, who rules our home:
Home—but I say no more: upon my tongue
Treads hard the ox o' the adage.
45
Had it voice,
The home itself might soothliest tell its tale;
I, of set will, speak words the wise may learn,
To others, nought remember nor discern.
[ Exit. The chorus of old men of Mycenæ enter, each leaning on a staff. During their song Clytemnestra appears in the background, kindling the altars.

O schafft Erlösung, Götter, mir von diesen Müh'n,
1

, quasi significaretur
, non locum haberet duplex epitheton, sicut non dicturum fuisse Homerum

Sic tamen in Hecuba v. 282.
Ἀνδρόβουλον recte explicat Phrynichus in Bekkeri Anecd. p. 19, 23.
. Sic infra v. 336.

ὢ ὢ
, esset posita.

. Eustathius, sive quem is secutus est, ad linguam nimis crassam referre videtur p. 962, 19.
. Vt Aeschylus, sic Strattis apud Hesychium,
. Dubitari potest an positum fuerit illud proverbium in Phocylidis poemate νουθετικῷ v. 18. ubi legitur
.

Prolog.

Da Kalchas vorhergesagt hatte, dafs Troja erst im zehnten Jahre fallen werde (Hom. Zu dem acc. temp. Vgl. Eur. Die Erklärung des Schol.

Ahnlich ist die Deutung des Schol. Oed. Pal. Χ 42 ἀρρήτων ἐπέων γλώσσῃ σφρηγὶς ἐπικείσθω) mit volkstümlichem Humor, der gern in Bezeichnung von Strafwerkzeugen sich geltend macht, in βοῦς ἐπὶ γλ. βέβηκεν umgestaltet und bedeutet βοῦς ἱμὰς βόειος oder βοεία: der Ochsenziemer oder die Knute, die gefürchtet wird, ist der Schlüssel am Munde. Vgl. Hesych. βοῦς· μάστιξ, Plaut. Asin. I 1, 21 aput fustitudinas ferricrepinas insulas, ubi vivos homines mortui incursant boves. Lobeck (Aglaoph.

Hipp.
