O kindly light of the day that brings retribution. Now I would pronounce that gods, the punishers of mortals from on high, look down upon the abominations of earth, beholding this man here lying, as is delightful to me, in the woven robes of the Furies, paying the penalty of the devices of his father's hand. For Atreus, the ruler of this land, his father, being a rival about the power, that I may speak clearly, banished from his city and his house Thyestes my father, his own brother. And wretched Thyestes, having come again a suppliant at the hearth, found a secure lot, so that he should not dying stain his paternal soil with his blood. But Atreus, the godless father of this man, with more zeal than love, pretending cheerfully to hold a day of banqueting by way of welcome to my father, served him a banquet of his children's flesh. The parts about the feet indeed, and the comb-like tips of the fingers, seated apart, he broke from those above 1 . And. having immediately in ignorance taken that part of the flesh which could not be distinguished, he eats a food, as thou seest, destructive to the race. And then, having discovered the unholy deed, he screamed, and falls back from the butchery vomiting: and on the descendants of Pelops he imprecates an intolerable doom, rightfully devoted to a curse the insult of the board 2 , so perish the whole race of Pleisthenes! In consequence of these things you may see this man fallen: and I am the righteous contriver of his slaughter, for he drives into exile me, the thirteenth child, along with my wretched sire. being a little one in swaddling-clothes. But Justice brought me back again when I had grown up. And I have reached this man though I was at a distance, having put together every contrivance for the sad conspiracy. Thus it is indeed glorious for me even to fall after I have seen him within the toils of Justice.

Hail to this joyful day, whoſe welcome light
Brings vengeance! Now I know that the juſt Gods
Look from their ſkies, and puniſh impious mortals,
1755
Seeing this man roll’d in the blood-wove woof,
The tiſſue of the Furies, grateful ſight,
And ſuffering for his father’s fraudful crimes.
Atreus, his father, ſovereign of this land,
Brooking no rival in his pow’r, drove out

My father and his brother, poor Thyeſtes,
A wretched exile:
from his country far
He wander’d; but at length return’d, and ſtood
A ſuppliant before the household Gods,

Secure in their protection that his blood
Shou’d not diſtain the pavement.
This man’s father,
The ſacrilegious Atreus, with more ſhow
Of courtesy than friendſhip, ſpread the feaſt,
1770
Devoting, ſuch the fair pretence, the day
To hoſpitality and genial mirth:

Dawn of the day of rightful vengeance, hail!
I dare at length aver that gods above
Have care of men and heed of earthly wrongs.
I, I who stand and thus exult to see
This man lie wound in robes the Furies wove,
1855
Slain in requital of his father's craft.
Take ye the truth, that Atreus, this man's sire,
The lord and monarch of this land of old,
Held with my sire Thyestes deep dispute,
Brother with brother, for the prize of sway,
1860
And drave him from his home to banishment.
Thereafter, the lorn exile homeward stole
And clung a suppliant to the hearth divine,
And for himself won this immunity—
Not with his own blood to defile the land
1865
That gave him birth. But Atreus, godless sire
Of him who here lies dead, this welcome planned—
With zeal that was not love he feigned to hold
In loyal joy a day of festal cheer,
And bade my father to his board, and set
1870
Before him flesh that was his children once.
First, sitting at the upper board alone,
He hid the fingers and the feet, but gave
The rest—and readily Thyestes took
What to his ignorance no semblance wore
1875
Of human flesh, and ate: behold what curse
That eating brought upon our race and name!
For when he knew what all unhallowed thing
He thus had wrought, with horror's bitter cry
Back-starting, spewing forth the fragments foul,
1880
On Pelops' house a deadly curse he spake—
As darkly as I spurn this damnèd fool,
So perish all the race of Pleisthenes.
Thus by that curse fell he whom here ye see,
And I—who else?—this murder wove and planned;
1885
For me, an infant yet in swaddling bands,
Of the three 1 children youngest, Atreus sent
To banishment by my sad father's side:
But Justice brought me home once more, grown now
To manhood's years; and stranger thro' I was,
1890
My right hand reached unto the chieftain's life,
Plotting and planning all that malice bade.
And death itself were honour now to me,
Beholding him injustice' ambush ta'en.

1545
Verbarg er abwärts, daß die Tischgenossen nichts
Erkannten.
1560

Denn der Ausdruck κἄπειτ᾽ ἐπιγνοὺς κτἑ. Iph. T. 949 ξένια μονοτράπεζά μοι παρέσχον), erklärt den Umstand, dafs dem Thyestes das besondere Mahl zukommen konnte.
