Woe! Oh earth, earth! would that thou hadst received me before I had beheld this [my king] stretched on lowly floor of the silver-sided bath. Who shall bury him? who shall lament him? Wilt thou dare to do this, after having murdered thine own husband—to pour the loud wail over his life, wrongfully to perform a graceless grace in atonement for thy bold deeds 3 ?

O Earth, that I had reſted in thy boſom,
1715
E'er I had ſeen him lodg’d with thee, and ſhrunk
To the brief compaſs of a ſilver urn!
Who ſhall attend the rites of ſepulture?
Who ſhall lament him? Thou, whoſe hand has ſhed
Thy husband’s blood, wilt thou dare raiſe the voice
1720
Of mourning o’er him? Thy unhallow’d hand
Renders these honours, ſhou'd they come from thee,
Unwelcome to his ſhade.
What faithful tongue,
Fond to recount his great and godlike acts,
1725
Shall ſteep in tears his funeral eulogy?

Sepolcro chi mai gli darà?
Chi lugubri pianti? Tu forse,
tu questo oseresti? alzar gemiti
funerei su l'uomo sgozzato

all'alma odïoso tributo?
Oh!, qual funebre elogio
per questo sacro re,
con rompere di lagrime,
con veritiero cuor favellerà?

O Earth! that I had lain at rest
And lapped for ever in thy breast,
Ere I had seen my chieftain fall
Within the laver's silver wall,
Low-lying on dishonoured bier.
1800
And who shall give him sepulchre,
And who the wail of sorrow pour?
Woman, 'tis thine no more!
A graceless gift unto his shade
Such tribute, by his murd'ress paid!
1805
Strive not thus wrongly to atone
The impious deed thy hand hath done.
Ah who above the god-like chief
Shall weep the tears of loyal grief?
Who speak above his lowly grave

The last sad praises of the brave?

O Erdreichs Nacht!
1495
Ihn durch schnödes Gepräng
Unliebender Liebe zu feiern?
Wer wird den Grabesgesang um den Göttergleichen
Anstimmen unter Thränen,
Von lauterm Herzensdrang getrieben?
