Alas! alas! ye frantic youths, distrustful of friends, and unsubdued by troubles, have wretched seized on your paternal dwelling with the spear.
Alas! alas! ye that overthrew the walls of your palace, and having cast an eye on bitter monarchy how have ye now settled your claims with the steel?
Alas for them, wretched! Alas! for the imprecations of death which avenged murder by murder.

Ah, what frantic rage possest
Each unyielding, ruthless breast,
985
Wisdom scorn'd, and friends defy'd,
By threat'ning ills unterrify'd,
'Gainst their father's house to bear
Wretched they, the fatal spear!
Wretched they a wretched death
990
Found their house's fall beneath.
Each the ruin'd palace o'er
Strove t' extend his envied pow'r:
Each unrival'd and alone
Proudly strove to seize the throne.
995
But the sword their contest ends,
Not the lovely strife of friends.
Hate, that never knows remorse,
Fury of the father's curse,
Thro' their sides with horrid sway
1000
Urg'd the sharp steel's purple way.

Ben parve ad essi amara

Col ferro ormai la gara
compiuta avete. L'Erinni terribile,

Ora, colpiti al fianco,
colpiti entro nei visceri
fraterni al lato manco,
ambi cadeano. Ahimè, furie divine,
ahi, furie che imprecavano

Ben fonda è la ferita

onde fra loro la imprecante Furia

( To the dead.)
Children of bitterness, and sternly brave—
One, proud of heart against persuasion's voice,
One, against exile proof! ye win your choice—
Each in your fatherland, a separate grave!
Alack, on house and heritage
895
They brought a baneful doom, and death for wage!
One strove through tottering walls to force his way,
One claimed, in bitter arrogance, the sway,
And both alike, even now and here,
Have closed their suit, with steel for arbiter!
900
And lo, the Fury-fiend of Oedipus, their sire,
Hath brought his curse to consummation dire!
Each in the left side smitten, see them laid—
The children of one womb,
Slain by a mutual doom!
905
Alas, their fate! the combat murderous,
The horror of the house,
The curse of ancient bloodshed, now repaid!
Yea, deep and to the heart the deathblow fell,
Edged by their feud ineffable—
910
By the grim curse, their sire did imprecate—
Discord and deadly hate!
