But I say to the rulers of the Cadmaeans, if not another single person is willing to take part with me in burying him, I will bury him, and will expose myself to peril by burying my brother. And I feel no shame at being guilty of this disobedient insubordination against the city. Powerful is the tie of the common womb from which we sprung, from a wretched mother, and a hapless sire. Wherefore, my soul, do thou, willing with the willing share in his woes, with the dead, thou living, with sisterly feeling—and nought shall lean-bellied wolves tear his flesh—let no one suppose it. All woman though I be, I will contrive a tomb and deep-dug grave for him, bearing earth in the bosom-fold of my fine-linen robe, and I myself will cover him; let none imagine the contrary: an effective scheme shall aid my boldness.

And to these Theban rulers I declare,
If none besides dare bury him, myself
Will do that office, heedless of the danger,
And think no shame to disobey the state,
Paying the last sad duties to a brother.
1165
Nature has tender ties, and strongly joins
The offspring of the same unhappy mother,
And the same wretched father. In this task
Shrink not, my soul, to share the ills he suffer'd,
Involuntary ills; and whilft life warms
1170
This breast, be bold to show a sister's love
To a dead brother. Shall the famish'd wolves
Fatten on him? Away with such a thought.
I, tho' a woman, will prepare his tomb,
Dig up the earth, and bear it in this bosom,
1175
In these fine folds to cover him. Go to.
I will not be oppos'd. Fruitful invention
Shall devise means to execute the task.

Ai patroni di Tebe io questo dico.
Se niun altro costui vuol seppellire,
io lo seppellirò, questo pericolo
1135
affronterò sola io. Non m'è disdoro,
dando sepolcro al fratel mio, mostrarmi
ribelle alla città.
Troppa è la forza
del comun sangue onde nascemmo: misera
1140
1145
1150
sarà compagna l'opera mia scaltra.

And I—to those who make such claims of rule
In Cadmus' town—I, though no other help,
( Pointing to the body of Polynices)
I, I will bury this my brother's corse
And risk your wrath and what may come of it!
1060
It shames me not to face the State, and set
Will against power, rebellion resolute:
Deep in my heart is set my sisterhood,
My common birthright with my brothers, born
All of one womb, her children who, for woe,
1065
Brought forth sad offspring to a sire ill-starred.
Therefore, my soul! take thou thy willing share,
In aid of him who now can will no more,
Against this outrage: be a sister true,
While yet thou livest, to a brother dead!
1070
Him never shall the wolves with ravening maw
Rend and devour: I do forbid the thought!
I for him, I—albeit a woman weak—
In place of burial-pit, will give him rest
By this protecting handful of light dust
1075
Which, in the lap of this poor linen robe,
I bear to hallow and bestrew his corpse
With the due covering. Let none gainsay!
Courage and craft shall arm me, this to do.

Drum dulde willig, was er ungern trug, o Herz,
Dem Todten lebend opfre dich mit Schwestersinn!'
Nein, diesen Leichnam sollen nicht raubgierige
980
Das Grab bereiten und die Grabesehren weih'n;
