Seven Against Thebes

1. On rapporte parfois ces vers à Œdipe et à Jocaste. C'est une erreur certaine : il n'est question ici que de la faute primitive, celle qui a causé la perte de toute la race, et non de l'inceste involontaire d'Œdipe, qui n'en est qu'une suite indirecte. Les mots grecs d'ailleurs ne se prêtent pas à une telle interprétation : c'est une folie, un délire (παράνοια), qui rapproche Laïos et Jocaste, en dépit de l'ordre du dieu, tandis que l'inceste n'a eu pour cause qu'une méprise (ἄγνοια).

zweites Stasimon, welches die Verkettung von Schuld und Buße im Labdakidenhause und den inneren Zusammenhang der Trilogie darlegt: Der Fluch des Ödipus, dessen Erfüllung der Streit seiner Söhne beschleunigt, wird zu dem Wechselmorde der Brüder füh- ren und so wird ein unsühnbarer Greuel zur. alten Not des Labda- kidenhauses hinzukommen. Diese alte Not begann mit der Schuld des Laios, dem Ungehorsam gegen das Gebot des Delphischen Gottes. Die Schuld des Laios, welche er alsbald mit seinem Leben büßte, übt ihre verderbliche Wirkung fort auf die nächste und übernächste Generation, auf Ödipus, dessen hohes Glück mit der Selbstblendung und der Verfluchung der Söhne schmählich endigte, jetzt auf die Söhne des Ödipus, und mit den Fürsten leidet der Staat, wenn er nur nicht mit ihnen zugrunde geht". In ähnlicher Weise faßt der Chor- gesang Cho. 1063 ff. die Schicksale des Atridenhauses zusammen. Der Gesang wird vom Gesamtchor vorgetragen.
