The Seven against Thebes. (OCR draft) Experimental (The Seven against Thebes.. Theodore Alois Buckley, 1849.) — 720 focus
I shudder with dread that the power that lays waste this house, not like the gods, the all-true, the evil-boding Erinnys summoned by the curses of the father, is bringing to a consummation the wrathful curses of distracted Œdipus . 'Tis this quarrel, fatal to his sons, that arouses her.
And the Chalybian stranger, emigrant from Scythia, is apportioning their shares, a fell divider of possessions, the sternhearted steel , allotting them land to occupy, just as much as it may be theirs to possess when dead, bereft of their large domains .
When they shall have fallen, slain by each other's hands in mutual slaughter, and the dust of the ground shall have drunk up the black-clotted blood of murder, who will furnish expiation? who will purify them? Alas for the fresh troubles mingled with the ancient horrors of this family!
for I speak of the ancient transgression with its speedy punishment; yet it abides unto the third generation: since Laius, in spite of Apollo, who had thrice declared, in the central oracles of Pytho, that, dying without issue, he would save the state ,
did, notwithstanding, overcome by his friends, in his infatuation beget his own destruction, the parricide Œdipus, who dared to plant in an unhallowed field, where he had been reared, a bloody root.— 'Twas phrenzy linked the distracted pair; and
as it were a sea of troubles brings on one billow that subsides, and rears another triply cloven, which too dashes about the stern of our state. But between [it and us] there stretches a fence at a small interval, a tower in width alone . And I fear lest the city should be overcome along with its princes.
For the execrations, that were uttered long ago, are finding their accomplishment: bitter is the settlement, and deadly things in their consummation pass not away. The wealth of enterprising merchants , too thickly stowed, brings with it a casting overboard from the stern.
For whom of mortals did the gods, and his fellow-inmates in the city, and the many lives of herding men , admire so much as they then honoured Œdipus, who had banished from the realm the baneful pest that made men her prey.
But when he unhappy was apprised of his wretched marriage, despairing in his sorrow, with phrenzied heart he perpetrated a twofold horror; he deprived himself with parricidal hand of the eyes that were more precious than his children.
And indignant because of his scanty supply of food , he sent upon his sons, alas! alas! a curse horrible in utterance, even that they should some time or other, share his substance between them with sword-wielding hand; and now I tremble lest the swift Erinnys should be on the point of fulfilling that prayer.

LES SEPT CONTRE THÈBES (OCR draft) Experimental (LES SEPT CONTRE THÈBES. Paul Mazon, 1920-1925.) — 720 focus

The Seven Chiefs against Thebes (OCR draft) Experimental (The Seven Chiefs against Thebes. Robert Potter, 1779.) — 720 focus
She comes, the fierce tremendous pow'r q ,
And harrows up my ſoul with dread;
825
No gentle Goddess, prompt to ſhow'r
Her bleſſings on ſome favour'd head.
I know her now, the propheteſs of ill,
And vengeance ratifies each word,
The votive fury, fiend abhor'd;
830
The father's curſes to fulfill
Dreadful ſhe comes, and with her brings
The brood of fate, that laps the blood of kings.
The rude barbarian, from the mines
Of Scythia, o'er the lots preſides;
835
Ruthless to each his ſhare aſſigns,
And the conteſted realm divides;
To each allots no wider a domain
Than, on the cold earth as they lie,
Their breathless bodies occupy,
840
Regardless of an ampler reign.
Such narrow compaſs does the ſword,
A cruel umpire, their high claims afford.
Conflicting thus in furious mood,
Shou'd each by other's hand be ſlain;
845
Shou'd the black fountain of their blood
Spout forth, and drench the thirſty plain;
Who ſhall the ſolemn expiation pay?
Who with pure lavers cleanſe the dead?
Miſeries to miſeries thus ſucceed,
850
And vengeance marks this houſe her prey,
Swift to chaſtiſe the firſt ill deed;
And the ſon's ſons in her deep fury bleed.
The firſt ill deed from Laius ſprung:
Thrice from his ſhrine these words of fate
855
Aweful the Pythian Phœbus ſung,
"Die childless, wou'dſt thou ſave the ſtate."
Urg'd by his friends, as round the free wine flows,
To Love's forbidden rites he flies.
By the ſon's hand the father dies.
860
He in the chaſte ground, whence he aroſe,
Was bold t' implant the deadly root;
And madneſs rear'd each balefulſpreading ſhoot.
Wide o'er misfortune's ſurging tide
Billows ſucceeding billows ſpread;
865
Shou'd one, its fury ſpent, ſubſide,
Another lifts its boiſt'rous head,
And foams around the city's ſhatter'd prow.
But ſhou'd the rough tempeſtuous wave
Force thro' our walls too ſlight to ſave,
870
And lay the thin partition low,
Will not the flood's reſiſtleſs ſway
Sweep kings and people, town and realms away?
The dreadful curſe pronounc'd of old
To vengeance rouſes ruthless hate;
875
And ſlaughter, ranging uncontrol'd,
Purſues the hideous work of fate.
Wreck'd in the ſtorm the great, the brave, the wise
Are ſunk beneath the roaring tide.
Such was the chief, this city's pride,
880
Dear to each God in yon' bright ſkies,
Whoſe prudence took our dread away,
The rav'ning monſter gorg'd with human prey,
Where now the chief? His glories where?
Fall'n, fall'n. From the polluted bed
885
Indignant madness, wild deſpair,
And agonizing grief ſucceed.
The light of Heav'n, himſelf, his ſons abhor'd,
Darkling he feeds his gloomy rage,
Bids them, with many' a curſe, engage,
890
And part their empire with the ſword.
That curſe now holds its unmov'd ſtate,
The furious fiend charg'd with the work of fate.

sospinge i figli a esizïale fine.
1 Antistrofe I
Distributore dei dominî aviti
815
è lo straniero càlibo,
colono degli Sciti,
il crudo ferro, amaro compartitor di beni,
che a ciascun d'essi tanta terra prodiga
quanta la spenta loro spoglia n'empia,
820
orbato ognun degli ampli suoi terreni.
Quando, con mutua strage,
con mutuo scempio, essi trafitti cadano,
e sorbito abbia la terrestre polvere
il sangue sparso in livida compage,
825
chi mai riscatto, espïazione, porgere
potrebbe? Ahi, nuovi della casa affanni,
commisti a quelli antichi ormai negli anni!
2 Antistrofe II
840
una progenie a sanguinosi eventi
sacra die' a luce: insania
i due consorti strinse, ambi dementi.
Un estuare di sciagure, simile
ad un mar, li sospinge. Un flutto piomba,
845
s'erge un altro, con triplice
artiglio: un terzo avvolge con gran romba
della città la poppa. A schermo tendesi
poco la torre entro l'immensità.
Ond'io nel cuore trepido
850
che coi suoi re sprofondi la città.
4 Strofe IV
Esito avran per essi le molteplici
imprecazioni avite: e poi che giunsero,
i rovinosi guai tardi dileguano.
Allor che aggrava troppa
855
dovizia il legno, debbono
lunge scagliarla i nauti da la poppa.
4 Antistrofe IV
Or, qual mortale mai tanto onorarono
860
umane stirpi, quanto
Edipo, che fe' libera
la patria sua dall'omicida incanto?
5 Strofe V
Ma reso conscio il misero
dei nefandi sponsali,
865
con dissennato spirito,
male reggendo l'impeto
del cordoglio, due mali
compiva. Con la man che il padre uccise,
sé dalle care luci in bando mise:
870
5 Antistrofe V
e contro ai figli proprî,
per martirio di fame,
imprecazioni orribili
avventò: che il retaggio
con le omicide lame
875
compartissero. Onde or n'empie sgomento
che l'Erinni affrettar voglia l'evento.

I shudder in dread of the power, abhorred by the gods of high heaven,
The ruinous curse of the home till roof-tree and rafter be riven!
735
Too true are the visions of ill, too true the fulfilment they bring
To the curse that was spoken of old by the frenzy and wrath of the king!
Her will is the doom of the children, and Discord is kindled amain,
And strange is the Lord of Division, who cleaveth the birthright in twain,—
The edged thing, born of the north, the steel that is ruthless and keen,
740
Dividing in bitter division the lot of the children of teen!
Not the wide lowland around, the realm of their sire, shall they have,
Yet enough for the dead to inherit, the pitiful space of a grave!
Ah, but when kin meets kin, when sire and child,
Unknowing, are defiled
745
By shedding common blood, and when the pit
Of death devoureth it,
Drinking the clotted stain, the gory dye—
Who, who can purify?
Who cleanse pollution, where the ancient bane
750
Rises and reeks again?
Whilome in olden days the sin was wrought,
And swift requital brought—
Yea on the children of the child came still
New heritage of ill!
755
For thrice Apollo spoke this word divine,
From Delphi's central shrine,
To Laius— Die thou childless! thus alone
Can the land's weal be won!
But vainly with his wife's desire he strove,
760
And gave himself to love,
Begetting Oedipus, by whom he died,
The fateful parricide!
The sacred seed-plot, his own mother's womb,
He sowed, his house's doom,
765
A root of blood! by frenzy lured, they came
Unto their wedded shame.
And now the waxing surge, the wave of fate,
Rolls on them, triply great—
One billow sinks, the next towers, high and dark,
770
Above our city's bark—
Only the narrow barrier of the wall
Totters, as soon to fall;
And, if our chieftains in the storm go down,
What chance can save the town?
775
Curses, inherited from long ago,
Bring heavy freight of woe:
Rich stores of merchandise o'erload the deck,
Near, nearer comes the wreck—
And all is lost, cast out upon the wave,
780
Floating, with none to save!
Whom did the gods, whom did the chief of men,
Whom did each citizen
In crowded concourse, in such honour hold,
As Oedipus of old,
785
When the grim fiend, that fed on human prey,
He took from us away?
But when, in the fulness of days, he knew of his bridal unblest,
A twofold horror he wrought, in the frenzied despair of his breast—
Debarred from the grace of the banquet, the service of goblets of gold,
790
He flung on his children a curse for the splendour they dared to withhold,
A curse prophetic and bitter— The glory of wealth and of pride,
With iron, not gold, in your hands, ye shall come, at the last, to divide!
Behold, how a shudder runs through me, lest now, in the fulness of time,
The house-fiend awake and return, to mete out the measure of crime!

Mir graut: die stammtilgende Göttin,
695
Die den Göttern nicht Verwandte,
Sie, des Leids wahre Prophetin,
Von des Vaters Fluch beschworen,
Sie erscheint, Dedipus' wahnsinnigen, zornschnaubenden Fluch führt sie hinaus;
Brudervertilgender Zwist erweckt sie.
700
Erste Gegenstrophe.
Die Loose dort würfelt ein Fremdling,
Aus der Skythen Lande kam er,
Des Gebiets roher Vertheiler,
Der ergrimmte Stahl, der Mörder;
705
Wann ihm das größere Reich entschwunden.
Zweite Strophe.
Wenn Brudermord Beide nun
Todt in den Staub streckte, die Brüder,
Wenn dann die Heimaterde trank
Den schwarzdunklen Strom, ihr Todesblut:
710
Wer böte Sühnopfer dar,
Wer wüsche sie rein von Schuld?
O dieses Hauses neue Noth,
Altem Leide zugesellt!
Zweite Gegenstrophe.
Der schweren Schuld alter Zeit
715
Denk' ich, da schnell büßte der Frevler;
Doch herrscht sie fort in's dritte Glied.
Es bot Lajos Phöbos' Worte Troy,
Das dreimal einst warnend ihm
Aus Pytho's Erdmitte dort
720
Entgegenscholl: nur kinderlos
Sterbend, rett' er Haus und Stadt.
Dritte Strophe.
Bethört dann durch die Lust im Unverstand,
Erzeugt' er sich selbst das Verderben,
Den Sohn, der den Vater erschlägt,
725
Der auf ungeweihtes
Saatland, aus dem er selbst entsproß,
Kühn die blutigen Wurzeln
Gepflanzt. Die verblendeten Gatten
Einte wilder Wahnsinn.
730
Dritte Gegenstrophe.
Ein Meer, wälzt er des Leides Flut heran;
Vierte Gegenstrophe.
Denn wer ward so von Göttern hochgeehrt,
745
Von Mitbürgern und dem Volk,
Das reichgesegnet blüht' in stolzem Glück,
Als Oedipus in jener Zeit,
Da die Brut er vertilgte,
Räuberin tapf'rer Männer?
750
Fünfte Strophe.
Doch kaum sah er ein,
Der Arme, welch unsel'gen Bund
Er schloß, da trug er nicht den Schmerz;
Rasend verübte die Hand
Des Vatermörders zwei
755

. Schützius “aliud est" inquit "γόνυ κάμπτειν, quod significat requiescere, aliud πόδας κάμπτειν, quod est ambulare, ire.
dictam esse. Hesychius
. Praeterea non modo

quiescere est, sed etiam

quidem et
Eandem confirmat vocabulum
, de quo vide Hesychium eiusque interpretes. Neque

Quae post versum 784. sequuntur, valde perturbata sunt. Ea in omnibus libris hoc ordine scripta leguntur,
. Difficile dictu fortasse videbitur, unde tanta oriri perturbatio potuerit.
procedunt, choro adscripsisset, similiterque in Lipsiensi ad illum versum
chori nomen adscriptum est, hic autem versus
cum duobus sequentibus nuntio tributi sunt. Contra choro interroganti
τί δ' ἐστὶ πρᾶγος νεόκοτον πόλει παρόν;
quid potuit aptius responderi quam
, chorum subiicere
, et mox, quod prorsus absurdum esset,
? Non magis reliqua sana sunt. Illa quidem,
, sed apertis verbis dixisset mortui sunt. Nec posuisset ista,
, nisi proxime praegresso, quo referrentur.
, respondet nuntius
. Praesagiens mala chorus respondet
. Jam certius rem intelligit chorus:
. Tum vero nuntius concludit orationem,
. Ibi chorus, facinoris atrocitate exhorrescens, apertius etiam sibi narrari rem postulat:
. Respondet ergo non ambigue nuntius,
. Inde chorus, rem paene incredibilem secum reputans,
. Confirmat id nuntius:
. Iterum chorus, eadem cogitatione occupatus,
et
et
γένους

Tim.
