This is selfevident, the tale of the messenger is before my eyes—Double are our sorrows, double are the horrors of them that have fallen by mutual slaughter; doubly shared are these consummated sufferings. What shall I say? What, but that of a certainty troubles on troubles are constant inmates of this house? But, my friends, ply the speeding stroke of your hands about your heads, before the gale of sighs, which ever wafts on its passage, the bark, on which no sighs are heard, with sable sails, the freighted with the dead, untrodden for Apollo, the sunless, across Acheron, and to the invisible all-receiving shore .
But [enough]! for here are coming to this bitter office both Antigone and Ismene. I am assured beyond all doubt that they will send forth a fitting wail from their lovely deep-cinctured bosoms. And right it is that we before the sound of their wailing reach us, both ejaculate the dismal-sounding chaunt of Erinnys, and sing a hateful paean to Pluto. Alas! ye that are the most hapless in your sisterhood of all women that fling the zone around their robes, I weep, I mourn, and there is no guile about so as not. to be truly wailing from my very soul.

Is this a tale of fear-created woe?
955
In very deed before our eyes
A twofold scene of misery lies,
And from a double slaughter double horrors flow;
Whilſt grief on grief, and groan on groan
Rush in, and make this house their own.
960
Come then, ye virgins, form the mournful bands,
To wail the mighty slain;
And ever and anon, at each sad pause
The dying cadence draws,
Together smite your high-rais'd hands,
965
The sullen sound attemper'd to the strain,
That with many' a dismal note
Accompanies the sable boat,
Slow as its sails on Acheron's dull stream,
Wafting its joyless numbers o'er
970
To that unlovely, dreary shore,
Which Phœbus never views, nor the light's golden beam.

che Apollo mai non varca,
che il sol mai non illumina,
verso la cieca terra,
che a tutti si disserra.

Look up, look forth! the doom is plain,
Nor spake the messenger in vain!
A twofold sorrow, twofold strife—
860
Each brave against a brother's life!
In double doom hath sorrow come—
How shall I speak it?—on the home!
Alas, my sisters! be your sighs the gale,
The smiting of your brows the plash of oars,
865
Wafting the boat, to Acheron's dim shores
That passeth ever, with its darkened sail,
On its uncharted voyage and sunless way,
Far from thy beams, Apollo, god of day—
The melancholy bark
870
Bound for the common bourn, the harbour of the dark!
Look up, look yonder! from the home
Antigone, Ismene come,
On the last, saddest errand bound,
To chant a dirge of doleful sound,
875
With agony of equal pain
Above their brethren slain!
Their sister-bosoms surely swell,
Heart with rent heart according well
In grief for those who fought and fell!
880
Yet—ere they utter forth their woe—
We must awake the rueful strain
To vengeful powers, in realms below,
And mourn hell's triumph o'er the slain!
Alas! of all, the breast who bind,—
885
Yea, all the race of womankind—
O maidens, ye are most bereaved!
For you, for you the tear-drops start—
Deem that in truth, and undeceived,
Ye hear the sorrows of my heart!

Zwiesache Trauer, doppelt Weh, muthvoll verübt
Im Wechselmord, zwiefaches Schicksal, blutig hier
Erfüllt! Wie nenn' ich's? Leides Leid, gehäuft auf dieses Hauses Herd!
Mädchen, wohlan! Laßt im Sturm der Klagen
Um euer Haupt des Gramgeleites Ruderschlag
825
Mitrauschen, der dem schwarzumflorten Trauerkahn
Stets folgt, dem jammerreichen, durch den Acheron
Zum Lande, das Apollon flieht, das sonnenlos
Alles in ewige Nacht hinabschlingt!
