One other god only indeed have I heretofore beheld in miseries, the Titan Atlas, subdued by the galling of adamantine bonds, who evermore in his back is groaning beneath the excessive mighty mass of the pole of heaven. And the billow of the deep roars as it falls in cadence, the depth moans, and the murky vault of Hades rumbles beneath the earth, and the fountains of the pure streaming rivers wail for his piteous pains.

Of heaven's high ſons with tortures quell'd,
That rack each joint, each ſinew ſtrain,
Titanian Atlas I beheld;
His giant ſtrength condemn'd to bear
The ſolid, vaſt, and pond'rous ſphere.

The ſprings whoſe freſh ſtreams ſwell around,
The hoarſe waves from their depths profound,
And all the gloomy realms below,
Sigh to his sighs, and murmur to his woe.

Strange is thy sorrow! one only I know who has suffered thy pain—
Atlas, the Titan, the god, in a ruthless, invincible chain!
He beareth for ever and ever the burden and poise of the sky,
The vault of the rolling heaven, and earth re-echoes his cry.
460
The depths of the sea are troubled; they mourn from their caverns profound,
And the darkest and innermost hell moans deep with a sorrowful sound;
And the rivers of waters, that flow from the fountains that spring without stain,
Are as one in the great lamentation, and moan for thy piteous pain.

ἀδαμαντοδέτοις
Colb. 1. Ceteri libri
ἀκαμαντοδέτοις
, quod iam Stanleius corrigendum esse vidit. Inepta et ipsa secum pugnans vox est
ἀκαμαντοδέτοις
, nec dubium quin Aeschylus ut supra v. 148.
ἀδαμαντοδέτοις
, sed alio significatu, scripserit. Illic enim proprie eo vocabulo usus est, hic nihil nisi invictam necessitatem dixit. Ita Dionysii tyranni dominatus
ἀδάμαντι δεδεμένος
III. 240. Eodem pertinet illud in oraculo, apud Herodotum VII. 141.
σοὶ δὲ τόδ᾽ αὐτις ἔπος ἐρέω, ἀδάμαντι πελάσσας
.

426. ἐν πόνοις δαμέντα: ἐν is not simply the equivalent of the instru- mental dative, as often (for instance Pers. 251 ἐν μιᾷ πληγῇ κατέφθαρται πολὺς ὄλβος), but expresses the dura- tion of the pain, as if it were πόνοις ἐνεζευγμένον. See on 168. – ἀκαμαν- τοδέτοις λύμαις: interpolated from 148 (one manuscript has ἀδαμαντοδέ- τοις). – θεόν: like his brother Pro- metheus.
