O land of hills, just object of veneration, what shall we suffer? to what part of the Apian land shall we fly, if there is any where a dark cavern? Would I were black smoke, approaching to the clouds of Jove, and altogether invisible, and flying away without wings, might like dust be lost.
But my heart can no longer abide without flight, and my darkened spirit 1 throbs. But my father's look-out has undone me: I perish with terror. Would I could obtain death by the twistings of the noose, before the abhorred man draw nigh 2 , and, ere that, may Pluto rule us dying by our own hands.
From whence can I have a seat in the air on which the watery clouds become snow 3 , or a rock, rugged, inaccessible to goats, not pointed out, 4 lonely, desolate, the haunt of vultures, witnessing a deep fall to me, before, in spite of my heart, having met with forced nuptials.

Des frissons sans cesse vont courant sur mon âme ;

Majestic wave their awecommanding ſhades,
What woes our ſhudd'ring ſouls await ?
Or flying on the wings of fear,
855
In ſome cavern dark and drear
Deep ſhall we plunge, and hide us from our fate?
Oh that I cou'd as ſmoke ariſe,
That rolls its black wreaths thro' the air;
Mix with the clouds, that o'er the ſkies
860
Show their light forms, and diſappear:
Or like the dust be toſt
By ev'ry ſportive wind, till all be lost!
Such thoughts in deep deſpair I roll,
The gloom of ſorrow black'ning on my ſoul.
865
Ah father, the vex'd ocean round
What horrors ſtruck thy aching ſight?
Diſmay, and pale affright,
And wild amazement ſink me to the ground.
Shall then the baſe, deteſted band
870
With rude touch ſeize us for their own?
No: rather ſhall this daring hand
Prepare for death the conſcious zone;
Rather in deep diſdain
My pale ſhade ſink to Pluto's dreary reign.
875
Oh might I ſit ſublime in air,
Where watry clouds the freezing ſnows prepare!
Or on a rock whoſe threat'ning brow,
Th' aerial vulture's unreach'd ſeat,
In ſolitary ſtate
880
Frowns ruinous o'er th' affrighted waſte below:
Roll'd headlong down its rugged ſide,
A mangled carcaſs let me lie,
E'er drag'd a pale, unwilling bride,
Victim to ſad neceſſity;
885
And my indignant heart
Feel the keen wounds of ſorrow's tort'ring dart.

Terra, ſi nigram latebram habet.

O land of hill and dale, O holy land,
What shall befall us? whither shall we flee,
845
From Apian land to some dark lair of earth?
O would that in vapour of smoke I might rise to the clouds of the sky,
That as dust which flits up without wings I might pass and evanish and die!
I dare not, I dare not abide: my heart yearns, eager to fly;
And dark is the cast of my thought; I shudder and tremble for fear.
850
My father looked forth and beheld: I die of the sight that draws near.
And for me be the strangling cord, the halter made ready by Fate,
Before to my body draws nigh the man of my horror and hate.
Nay, ere I will own him as lord, as handmaid to Hades I go!
And oh, that aloft in the sky, where the dark clouds are frozen to snow,
855
A refuge for me might be found, or a mountain-top smooth and too high
For the foot of the goat, where the vulture sits lonely, and none may descry
The pinnacle veiled in the cloud, the highest and sheerest of all,
Ere to wedlock that rendeth my heart, and love that is loveless, I fall!

O du holmreiche Flur, mit Recht verehrt!
740
Was wird mit uns? In welchen Winkel Apia's
Zeus' Wolkenheeren nahe zieh'n,
Entschwinden spurlos, Hauchen gleich emporgeweht,
745
Wie leiser Staub, unbeschwingt zerrinnen!
Erste Gegenstrophe.
Nicht unruhvoll mehr sänne dann mein Geist.
Jezt schlägt in dunkeln Wogen mir das Herz empor:
Des Vaters Botschaft tödtet, Angst entseelte mich.
Des Todes Arm möge denn
750
In Stranges Fesseln mich umfah'n,
Bevor der Gottverfluchte diesen Leib berührt!
Zuvor erblaßt, berge mich Grabesdunkel!
Zweite Strophe.
755
Ein glatter, unwirthsamer Fels,
Dede, steil, der Adler Haus,
Der, zum Abgrund schwindelud, mir
Tiefen Sturzes Zeuge sei,
Ch Gewalt, mein Herz zerreißend,
760
Mich an diese Männer kettet?
Zweite Gegenstrophe.

Dem Sinn würde eher πηγνύοιτο entsprechen. Aber auch Hom. — ἀπρόσδεικτος, weil dessen Gipfel in die Wolken hinein- ragt. οἰόφρων personifziert die in einsamer Höhe stolz empor- ragende Kuppe.
