I approve indeed of these wise prayers, oh, beloved: but be not you afraid hearing these unexpected and new tidings from your father: for from this suppliant-receiving mount I behold the ship: for conspicuous it escapes not my notice, and the breasts of the sails and the side-guards 1 of the vessel, and the prow in the fore part beholding with its eyes the way, too well obeying, as not being friendly to us, the directing helm in the hinder part of the vessel. And the sailors may be seen conspicuous with their black limbs out of white garments: and the other vessels and all the assistant band is conspicuous, but the leading ship, having furled her sails under the land, is rowed with oars sounding together. But it behooves you calmly and prudently looking to the matter, not to neglect these gods. But I will come, having taken assistants and patrons.

I like this well: wise are theſe votive ſtrains.
But tho' your father brings unwelcome tidings,
New, and unlook'd for, fear not you th' event.
785
From yon' high mound, where firſt you ſuppliant ſtood,
I saw a ſhip, I mark'd its waving ſtreamer,
Its ſwelling fails, and all its gallant trim :
Its prow with heedful eye obſerves its way,
Obedient to the helm that guides behind;
790
Unfriendly ſight! the ſailors too I mark'd,
Confpicuous in white robes their ſable limbs. e
Th' attendant veſſels, proudly riding, ſweep
The watry way; ſhe foremost near the land
Now furls her fails, and all the ſhouting crew
795
Bend to the eager oar.
Behoves you now
Sedate and ſage attention, nor neglect
Theſe Gods.
I haſte to bring their gen'rous aid,
800
The patrons, the protectors of your caufe.
Haply ſome herald may be ſent, with charge
To claim you as their prize: it ſhall not be:
Fear not th' event:
but ſhou'd our aid come ſlow,
805
Forget not the protection of this place.
Be comforted: the day, the hour ſhall come,
When he, that dares affront the Gods, ſhall feel
Their chaſt'ning vengeance bursting on his head.

Saggi son questi voti, ed io li approvo.
Tremore adesso non vi colga, udendo
dal padre un nuovo ed inatteso evento.
lo da questa vedetta asil dei supplici
scorgo la nave. Assai chiara è l'insegna.
765
770
troppo obbedisce. Ed i nocchieri vedo,
negri le membra in vesti bianche, e tutta
dell'altre navi la cospicua flotta.
E l'ammiraglia già le vele ammaina,
e, presso a terra, a tutto scroscio remiga.
775
Tranquille ora, serene or vi conviene
questi Numi. Fra poco, aiuti d'arme
e patroni recando, io qui sarò.
Verrà forse un araldo o un qualche messo,
780
per via condurvi, e rïaver la preda.
Ma di ciò nulla esito avrà. Timore
non concepite.
Ad ogni modo è meglio
che, qualora indugiar debba il soccorso,
785
non poniate in oblio questo rifugio.
Fa' cuor. Col tempo, al giorno scritto, l'uomo
che i Numi spregia, sconterà la pena.

Dear children, well and wisely have ye prayed;
I bid you now not shudder, though ye hear
770
New and alarming tidings from your sire.
From this high place beside the suppliants' shrine
The bark of our pursuers I behold,
By divers tokens recognized too well.
Lo, the spread canvas and the hides that screen
775
The gunwale; lo, the prow, with painted eyes
That seem her onward pathway to descry,
Heeding too well the rudder at the stern
That rules her, coming for no friendly end.
And look, the seamen—all too plain their race—
780
Their dark limbs gleam from out their snow-white garb;
Plain too the other barks, a fleet that comes
All swift to aid the purpose of the first,
That now, with furled sail and with pulse of oars
Which smite the wave together, comes aland.
785
But ye, be calm, and, schooled not scared by fear,
Confront this chance, be mindful of your trust
In these protecting gods. And I will hence,
And champions who shall plead your cause aright
Will bring unto your side. There come perchance
790
Heralds or envoys, eager to lay hand
And drag you captive hence; yet fear them not;
Foiled shall they be. Yet well it were for you,
(If, ere with aid I come, I tarry long),
Not by one step this sanctuary to leave.
795
Farewell, fear nought: soon shall the hour be born
When he that scorns the gods shall rue his scorn.

690
