I behold a youthful band 3 shaded with new-cropped boughs [at the altars] of these gods who preside over the games. But may this business of the guests of our city be unattended with hurt nor let strife arise to the city from unexpected and sudden things, for these the city wants not.
May Themis, the goddess of suppliants, daughter of lot-directing Jove, regard in truth our harmless flight: but do you, though being an old man 4 in mind, learn from one younger; reverencing a suppliant, you shall not be reduced to want. 5 * * * * gifts offered to the gods from a pure man.
By no means do you sit at the hearth of my house: but if the city be polluted in common, together let the people take care to work out remedies: but I could not perform a promise, before at least having communicated with all these of 1 citizens concerning these things.
You are the city, and you are the people, being a ruler accountable to none, you have sway over the altar, the hearth of the land: by your soul-deciding nod, and on a sole-sceptred throne you determine every thing; beware of pollution.

I ſee a ſtranger train, with boughs newpluck'd
Shading theſe Gods that o'er the games preſide.
420
May their arrival, tho' now ſtrangers here,
Yet hence deſcended, bring no dread event;
Nor from this ſudden, unexpected hap
Let war, which least we wish, disturb our ſtate.
May Themis, guardian of the ſuppliant, ſprung
425
From pow'rful Jove, look on our harmless flight.
Nor from a younger let thy age diſdain
To learn the reverence due to ſupplicants,
From whoſe pure hands the fav'ring Gods accept
The grateful offering.
430
Make not your requeſt
To me in private: if pollution ſtains
The public ſtate, the public has the charge
To expiate that ſtain; nor can my voice,
E'er conſultation with the people held,.
435
Warrant the fanction of the public faith.
Thou art the ſtate; the public thou; thy voice,
Superior to controul, confirms the ſanction
This altar gives; thy fole authority,
Highſcepter'd monarch of a ſovereign throne,
440
Is here obey'd: religion's voice pleads for us;
Revere it, nor profane theſe hallow'd feats.

tuo cenno, tutto dal trono regio

Lo, with bowed heads beside our city shrines
Ye sit 'neath shade of new-plucked olive-boughs.
390
Our distant kin's resentment Heaven forefend!
Let not this hap, unhoped and unforeseen,
Bring war on us: for strife we covet not.
Justice, the daughter of right-dealing Zeus,
Justice, the queen of suppliants, look down,
395
That this our plight no ill may loose
Upon your town!
This word, even from the young, let age and wisdom learn:
If thou to suppliants show grace,
Thou shalt not lack Heaven's grace in turn,
400
So long as virtue's gifts on heavenly shrines have place.
Not at my private hearth ye sit and sue;
And if the city bear a common stain,
Be it the common toil to cleanse the same:
Therefore no pledge, no promise will I give,
405
Ere counsel with the commonwealth be held.
Nay, but the source of sway, the city's self, art thou,
A power unjudged! thine, only thine,
To rule the right of hearth and shrine!
Before thy throne and sceptre all men bow!
410
Thou, in all causes lord, beware the curse divine!

350
Bevor ich Alles kundgethan vor allem Volk.
Zweite Strophe.
Du bist die Stadt, du das gesammte Volk;
Keinem Gerichte stehst
Du, lenkst machtvoll Altar und Landesherd;
Alleinherr durch des Auges Herrscherwink,
355
