Son of Palacthon, hear me with willing heart, king of the Pelasgians. Behold me a suppliant, an exile, a wanderer, like a white-spotted 2 heifer on the lofty rocks, where trusting for aid she lows telling to the herdsman her troubles.
I behold a youthful band 3 shaded with new-cropped boughs [at the altars] of these gods who preside over the games. But may this business of the guests of our city be unattended with hurt nor let strife arise to the city from unexpected and sudden things, for these the city wants not.
May Themis, the goddess of suppliants, daughter of lot-directing Jove, regard in truth our harmless flight: but do you, though being an old man 4 in mind, learn from one younger; reverencing a suppliant, you shall not be reduced to want. 5 * * * * gifts offered to the gods from a pure man.

re dei Pelasgi, con cuor benevolo.
Vedi me supplice, raminga, profuga,
come giovenca che il lupo incalza
sovra erta balza,
che al sommo vertice giunta, secura

leva il suo mugghio,
narra al bifolco la sua iattura.
Dinanzi ai Numi tutelari scorgo
la vostra schiera, e ombrarla i rami supplici.
Buon esito l'arrivo abbia di queste

estranee figlie d'Argo; e dagli eventi
inaspettati e impreveduti, guerra
non surga alla città guerre non giovano.
Diva dei supplici, di Zeus che vigila
tutto, ministra, proteggi, o Tèmide,
385
― questa incolpevole fuga. E me giovine,
odi tu, saggio per bianca età.
Abbi pietà
di chi vien supplice. Degna mercede
ne avrai dai Superi,
390

Child of Palaichthon, royal chief
Of thy Pelasgians, hear!
Bow down thine heart to my relief—
A fugitive, a suppliant, swift with fear,
A creature whom the wild wolves chase
385
O'er toppling crags; in piteous case
Aloud, afar she lows,
Calling the herdsman's trusty arm to save her from her foes!
Lo, with bowed heads beside our city shrines
Ye sit 'neath shade of new-plucked olive-boughs.
390
Our distant kin's resentment Heaven forefend!
Let not this hap, unhoped and unforeseen,
Bring war on us: for strife we covet not.
Justice, the daughter of right-dealing Zeus,
Justice, the queen of suppliants, look down,
395
That this our plight no ill may loose
Upon your town!
This word, even from the young, let age and wisdom learn:
If thou to suppliants show grace,
Thou shalt not lack Heaven's grace in turn,
400
So long as virtue's gifts on heavenly shrines have place.

Palächthons theurer Sohn, höre mich
330
345
Das Opfer von reinen Händen.
