O daughters, it is fitting to pay vows to the Argives, and to sacrifice and pour libations, as to the Olympian gods, since they are our preservers with one mind. And they have heard with indignation from me what things have been done with regard to our headstrong friends, our kindred: but they have appointed for me these attendants and armed guards, that I might have this mark of honour, and that I might not unexpectedly perish without their knowledge by the death of the spear, and an everlasting pollution be upon this city. I having obtained 1 such things, do you observe a proper gratitude of mind more precious 2 . And these things, indeed write down in addition to the many other written prudent sayings of your father, so as in time to convince the unknown band 3 . But every one bears a ready evil tongue against a stranger, and to speak slander is an easy thing. But I exhort you not to disgrace me, being of a time of life which is attractive to men. And by no means is the tender mature fruit easy to guard: but beasts and mortals harm it in somewise and winged and four-footed animals. Venus proclaims the dropping fruits: I affirm that rapine awaits them in whatever way they [try to] hinder it 4 . And on the fair-formed beauty of virgins every one that passes by sends forth a melting dart from his eye, overcome by desire. Therefore let us not suffer those things on account of which we have had much toil, and much sea has been† 5 passed over in a ship, nor let us cause disgrace to us, and pleasure to my enemies. But even a double dwelling is offered to us, the one, Pelasgus, and the other, the city gives, to dwell apart from servants: these things are easy. Only observe these injunctions of your father, honouring modesty more than life.

Daughters, it well becomes you to theſe Argives,
As to th' immortal Gods, to offer vows,
Libation, ſacrifice, and ev'ry rite
Religion knows;
ſo liberal their protection,
1060
So readily they lent their friendly ears,
And favour'd all my deeds againſt theſe youths,
Theſe kindred youths, whoſe headlong pride thus
haunts you.
Behold these ſpears around, to me aſſign'd
1065
An honorable guard, that no rude hand
With barb'rous rage may lift the ſecret ſword,
And with my blood pollute the pious land.
This grace, this condeſcenſion claims my thanks,
And you with grateful minds honour it ever.
1070
To all the wise inſtructions of your father,
Grav'd in your faithful tablets, grave theſe alſo,
That aftertimes may hold this ſtranger train
In reverence. Know then this, The tongue of malice
Is ever prompt to wound the ſtranger's fame
1075
With ſtings of infamy: I charge you then
Diſgrace me not. I ſee your blooming age,
Inforcing ſoft deſire; I know how hard
To guard the lovely flow'rs that grace that ſeaſon.
Beasts love to riot on their ſweets m , and man,
1080
Each insect, and each wantonwinged bird.
The Queen of Love proclaims their opening bloom;
Ah, wou'd ſhe ſuffer it remain uncropt!
And on the delicate tints, that kindling glow
On beauty's vermeil cheek, each roving youth
1085
With melting wiſhes darts the amorous glance.
We brook not this: elſe why these various toils,
Theſe wand'rings o'er the wideextended main ?
Let us not work this ſcandal to ourſelves,
And triumph to our foes.
1090
Two manſions here
Are offer'd to your choice; Pelaſgus one
Wou'd give, and one the ſtate; beneath whoſe roof
No male attendant waits: the choice is eaſy.
Only obſerve these precepts of your father,
1095
And guard with heedful care your virgin honour.

ai Numi Olimpî: ché salvezza a noi
non ambigua offerian. Li mosse a sdegno
udir da me quanto i cugini oprarono
contro amici congiunti. E m'assegnarono
1050
fossi trafitto, e sempiterno fio

profonde stirpi.
e quante belve in terra e in mare vivono.
1065
1070
flutti, serbato fu: ché a noi vergogna
non si procuri, ed ai nemici gaudio.
Duplice casa è a noi profferta: l'una
1075

High thanks, my children, unto Argos con,
And to this folk, as to Olympian gods,
Give offerings meet of sacrifice and wine;
For saviours are they in good sooth to you.
From me they heard, and bitter was their wrath,
1030
How those your kinsmen strove to work you wrong,
And how of us were thwarted: then to me
This company of spearmen did they grant,
That honoured I might walk, nor unaware
Die by some secret thrust and on this land
1035
Bring down the curse of death, that dieth not.
Such boons they gave me: it behoves me pay
A deeper reverence from a soul sincere.
Ye, to the many words of wariness
Spoken by me your father, add this word,
1040
That, tried by time, our unknown company
Be held for honest: over-swift are tongues
To slander strangers, over-light is speech
To bring pollution on a stranger's name.
Therefore I rede you, bring no shame on me
1045
Now when man's eye beholds your maiden prime.
Lovely is beauty's ripening harvest-field,
But ill to guard; and men and beasts, I wot,
And birds and creeping things make prey of it.
And when the fruit is ripe for love, the voice
1050
Of Aphrodite bruiteth it abroad,
The while she guards the yet unripened growth.
On the fair richness of a maiden's bloom
Each passer looks, o'ercome with strong desire,
With eyes that waft the wistful dart of love.
1055
Then be not such our hap, whose livelong toil
Did make our pinnace plough the mighty main:
Nor bring we shame upon ourselves, and joy
Unto my foes. Behold, a twofold home—
One of the king's and one the people's gift—
1060
Unbought, 'tis yours to hold,—a gracious boon.
Go—but remember ye your sire's behest,
And hold your life less dear than chastity.

Euch ziemt, o Kinder, Argos' Söhne durch Gebet
Und Opferduft und Spenden, gleich Olympiern,
930
Was naher Vettern Uebermuth mit dreister That
Nicht leicht zu hüten, wahrlich, ist die zarte Frucht;
Verfolgend bringen Männer ihr den Untergang.
Was hoch in Lüften flattert, was am Boden schleicht,
Was tief in Wassern wimmelt, hascht die Früchte gern,
950
Geschoß in süßem Sehnen, wer vorübergeht.
955
Drum duldet niemals, was zu flieh'n, so viele Noth,
Ein Haus zur Wohnung bietet sich zwiefach sogar;
Denn eins gewährt Pelasgos, eins gewährt die Stadt,
960

Ak. d. W. 1888 II S. 347 f.

Manche schließen ovv t' εὐκλείᾳ καὶ ἀμηνίτῳ βάξει λαῶν τῶν ἐγχώρων (so Hermann) an εἴη δὲ τὰ λῷστα an. Ag. 227 εὖ γὰρ εἴη, Cho. 867 εἴη δ᾽ ἐπὶ νίκῃ) gibt sich εἴη δὲ τὰ λώστα als Schluß zu erkennen. Es könnte der Abschreiber von λαῶν < τῶν ἐγχώρων > auf < τῷδ' > ἐν χώρῳ abgeirrt sein und der ur- sprüngliche Text ungefähr also gelautet haben: σὺν δ᾽ εὐκλείᾳ καὶ ἀμηνίτῳ βάξει λαῶν τῶν ἐγχώρων ἀθροισθῶμεν καθ᾽ ὁδοιπορίαν. Plaut. Pseud. 326 Pseudule, arcesse hostias vic- tumas lanios, huic ut sacruficem summo Iovi; nam hic mihi nunc est multo potior Iuppiter quam Iuppiter.
