But, that you may know, I will more plainly speak: for it is proper that an herald declare all things clearly—how shall I say, and by whom, that I come deprived of the train of kindred women? Mars determines not these things by witnesses, and puts an end to the strife not by the receipt of silver; but before that there are many slaughters of men, and trampling-down of lives.

Then let me ſpeak, and plainly; it becomes
An herald's office to ſpeak all things plain.

How ruffians, ſay, how robbers of the Gods,
This kindred train, that comes to claim these women?
Not by the voice of evidence does Mars
Decide these things k ; nor for a mulct of gold
Compound the dreadful quarrel; e'er it ends
1010
Many ſhall ſhed their dear blood in the dust,
Many lie low on earth, and bite the ground.

(For it behoves that heralds' words be clear,
Be they or ill or good), how art thou named?
By whom despoilèd of this sister-band
Of maidens pass I homeward?—speak and say!

Who judges not by witness but by war:
No pledge of silver now can bring the cause
To issue: ere this thing end, there must be
Corpse piled on corpse and many lives gasped forth.

viertes Epeisodion: 1.
