drittes Epeisodion: 1. Danaos, welcher bisher auf dem Götteraltare stand und nach der Meerseite spähte (721), kündigt das Nahen der Ägyptischen Flotte an und gibt seine Absicht kund Hilfe zu holen. 2. In dem Kommos 742-769 drücken die Danaiden dem Vater ihre Angst aus, während dieser sie zu beruhigen sucht. 3. Danaos bleibt bei seinem Ent- schlusse in der Hoffnung vor dem Ausschiffen der ägyptischen Mann- schaft mit Hilfe zurückzukommen. (Der Dichter braucht eben den Schauspieler, welcher den Danaos gegeben hat, für den Herold der Ägyptiaden.)

γάρ gibt den Grund zu der Mahnung am Götteraltar Schutz zu suchen an, weil der dazwischen- stehende Satz nur den Nebenge- danken während ich gehe und Hilfe hole" ausdrückt. πρέσβη, πρεσβεία (Gesandtschaft). Das Wort kommt sonst nirgends vor, weshalb man πρέσβυς dafür setzen wollte oder πρέσβις.

Danaos nimmt zur Be- ruhigung seiner Töchter den minder schlimmen Fall an, daß die Abge- sandten nicht gleich die Danaiden selbst wegschleppen, sondern sich in den Besitz eines Unterpfands setzen wollen um die Herausgabe derselben zu erzwingen.
