erstes Stasimon: Gebet zu Gott (Zeus). Schütze uns gegen den Übermut der Männer; als Nachkommen der Io rufen wir zu dir als unserem Stammvater. Wir stehen jetzt wieder auf der Flur, von welcher Io fortgetrieben wurde hinauf zum Bosporus, über diesen nach Klein- asien, durch Phrygien, Mysien, Lydien, Pamphylien, Kilikien, Phönikien nach Ägypten, wo sie erschien zum Staunen der Be- wohner, welche sich über das niegesehene Wesen, halb Kuh, halb Frau, entsetzten. Dort in Ägypten aber legtest du deine heilende Hand auf sie und sie erhielt wieder ihre Gestalt und gebar von dir den Epaphos, den Ahnherrn unseres Geschlechts. Wir haben also ein Anrecht auf deine Hilfe, und du kannst helfen; denn wer ist mäch- tiger als Zeus, dessen Wort sofort zur Tat wird!" δι' αἰῶνος (wie 590) < πράκτωρ τῶνδ' ἐφάνη> Ζεύς (für Ζεὺς αἰῶνος κρέων ἀπαύστου Her- mann) gibt die Antwort auf die vorausgehende Frage. κρέων (Schol. κραίνων) wie Pind. Ρyth. ΙΧ 99 κρέοντι σὺν Αἰακῷ. Die Worte πράκτωρ τῶνδ᾽ ἐφάνη sind dem Sinne entsprechend ergänzt nach Soph. Τr. 251 Ζεὺς ὅτου πράκτωρ φανῇ, 862 Κύπρις τῶνδ᾽ ἐφάνη πράκτωρ.

,,Durch die sanfte Gewalt seiner Hand und den göttlichen Anhauch wird ihrer Not (der Tier- gestalt und der Plage des οίστρος) ein Ende gemacht. Und vor Weh- mut und Scham bricht sie in Trä- nen aus." χειρός ist ergänzt für βία d. i. βίᾳ, die Erklärung zu σθένει. Vgl. Prom. 875 ἐπαφῶν ἀταρβεί χειρί. Mit πένθιμον αἰδῶ wird Rührung bei dem plötzlichen Wechsel ihres Schicksals und züch- tige Scham vor Zeus als Grund der Tränen bezeichnet.
