O youthful gods, you have ridden down the ancient laws, and have snatched [him] from my hands. But I dis honoured, miserable, inflamed with rage, in this land, ah, ah! will pour forth, in return for my sorrow, a drop from my heart on the ground causing sterility, and from it a venom destroying leaves and children (

mortelle à la feuille, mortelle à l'enfant, qui, s'abattant sur votre sol — Vengeance! Vengeance! — infligera à ce pays plus d'une plaie meurtrière 1 . — Mais je gémis! com-

Woe on you, younger gods! the ancient right
Ye have o'erridden, rent it from my hands.
I am dishonoured of you, thrust to scorn!
But heavily my wrath
Shall on this land fling forth the drops that blast and burn,
900
Venom of vengeance, that shall work such scathe
As I have suffered; where that dew shall fall,
Shall leafless blight arise,
Wasting Earth's offspring,—Justice, hear my call!—
And thorough all the land in deadly wise
905
Shall scatter venom, to exude again
In pestilence on men.
What cry avails me now, what deed of blood,
Unto this land what dark despite?
Alack, alack, forlorn

Are we, a bitter injury have borne,
Alack, O sisters, O dishonoured brood
Of mother Night!

mvp-comment-244-1 γένωμαι δυσοίστα] ‘Should I become intolerant to the citizens for what I have suffered?' The old reading was ἔπαθον, and the Schol. explained τί γένωμαι ; ὑπὸ τῶν πολιτῶν ἔπαθον, and ἔπαθον πολίταις δύσοιστα ὄντα. There are many examples of verbal adjectives in the feminine form.

Commentary (Arthur Sidgwick, 1887) (OCR draft) (Arthur Sidgwick's commentary on the Eumenides, aligned to the canonical Greek text.) focus

mvp-sidgwick-370-1-1 Wanting in V. Fl. Va. It is clear that it is not this refrain but the second repetition ( ll. 808-822

) that V. Fl. Fa. copied, as they follow M. G. in reading erroneously
ἀντιπαθῆ
l. 812 , and
ἐπεσσυμένος
l. 816 , whereas M. G. have the correct forms in the first refrain.

mvp-sidgwick-376-1-1 MSS. read:

στενάζω; τί ῥέξω;
γένωμαι· δύσοιστα
πολίταις ἔπαθον.
Perhaps the best emendation is γελῶμαι, I am mocked, a natural exclamation, as Antig. 838 οἴμοι γελῶμαι. [This is adopted by H. D. Hart, etc.]

mvp-sidgwick-376-2-1 δύσοιστα πολίταις ἔπαθον, Grievous to the city shall be my wrongs, i. e. the city shall pay for my ill-treatment. This is the Scholiast's explanation, and perhaps the best.
