Farewell you too: but it behoves me first to go to assign your abodes. To the sacred light of these conductors go, and while these dread victims are sacrificed to you, rush ing beneath the earth, keep back from the country what is hurtful, but send what is advantageous for the victory of the city. And do you sons of Cranaus inhabiting the city, con duct these new settlers. And may the good recollection of benefits remain to the citizens.

Heil auch euch. Nun laſst voran mich schreiten,
bei dem Lichte dieser Fackelträger
1005 euch zu eurer Wohnung hinzuweisen.
Kommt, ich schlacht' euch diese reinen Lämmer,
zwischen ihren Opferleibern schreitet
in den Erdschlund ihr, und alles Unheil
haltet drunten fest, doch allen Segen

All hail unto each honoured guest!
Whom to the chambers of your rest
'Tis mine to lead, and to provide

The hallowed torch, the guard and guide.
Pass down, the while these altars glow
With sacred fire, to earth below
And your appointed shrine.
There dwelling, from the land restrain

The force of fate, the breath of bane,
But waft on us the gift and gain
Of Victory divine!
And ye, the men of Cranaos' seed,
I bid ye now with reverence lead

These alien Powers that thus are made
Athenian evermore. To you
Fair be their will henceforth, to do
Whate'er may bless and aid!

Heil ruf' ich auch euch! Nun muß ich zuvor

Was Unheil bringt; was Segen verheißt,
Das sendet der Stadt zu dem Siege!
Dann führet sie selbst, ihr Bürger der Stadt

Commentary

Commentary on Aeschylus: Eumenides (Aeschylus. Eumenides. Sidgwick, Arthur, editor. Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1887.)

929. κατανασσαμένη , middle, housing in my city. 11. 932, 933. The MSS. read

ὁ δὲ μὴ κύρσας βαρέων τούτων
οὐκ οἶδεν ὅθεν πληγαὶ βιότου.
Now τούτων here must refer to the Furies, as αὗται above and τάσδε below: and consequently βαρέων must be wrong, as (1) it is the wrong gender: (2) even if we suppose (with D.) a fem. form βαρεῶν, it clearly is the wrong sense. What Aeschylus means to say is, He who incurs the wrath of the Furies meets with unexpected calamity: the sins of his fathers bring him into their power.

964. ἐπιβριθής , lit. weighing down upon, falling heavily on: i. e. grievous .

1034. παῖδες ἄπαιδες , the MSS. reading, could hardly mean childless children, which seems pointless: it might mean evil children, like vᾶes ἄναες: but the real objection to any such word as ἄπαιδες is that here the words in which the Chorus are addressed are specially reverent and honourable. It is best to reject it and then we get rid also of τύχᾳ τε, meaningless and unmetrical, at the end of 1. 1037.
